Re: Where do TIPS fit into the PP?
i dont care for tips ... they may follow the cpi which is just a price change index through out the 1500 mini economies that make us up , but it is not linked at all to your personal cost of living .

Re: Negative interest rates
Clarification/update per your PM: I will not renew them, barrett, but will leave the proceeds from matured bills to buy stocks and, if I can find them, some more gold coins. We had a bunch of T-Bills mature at Fidelity today. I replaced those will more T-Bills with maturities between six and 12 mon...

Re: PP Five years out?
3% real is what I meant. Can we dare assume 3% real, averaged over the next 5 years? 2% would be ok, too. I would like to think the PP could handle negative rates and float along giving better than 0.1% on a bank savings account. Therefore 2% real would be ok, too. That 1966-1981 era may be upon us...

Re: The tech-dumbell portfolio
I didn't aim my portfolio at the current financial climate. If I'd known what was going to happen, I'd have my own private jet by now. But for a disaster portfolio, it seems to be pretty successful so far. And it's about as simple as you can get: 2/3rd actual physical gold (geographically diverse) ...

There is never double taxation except on interest... It is a Susie ormann myth ...she used to tell her band of financial misfits it was double taxed to talk them out of it ..... Yes, that always irritated me. But she probably did more good than harm if she talked them out of taking loans to go on v...

mathjak, I know you are a big stock guy and am curious what your allocation is after this drop. I thought you said somewhere (maybe earlier on this thread) that you were somewhere around 25%. Is that about right? Thanks. Yes ..... Over all I am about 25% equities... Very high cash levels though ......

we are holding a lot of cash now , most being reinvested in drips and drabs . we have about 1 million in fdlxx , and 500k in gov't money markets and banks . these are the highest cash levels i can ever remember having ... with bond funds that are not treasuries being beat up i pulled about 1/2 out o...

Re: Negative 1 and 3 Month Treasury Rates
If Tbill rates stay negative I could just keep that 25% in cash in the brokerage account uninvested. By “uninvested,” you mean invested in your brokerage account’s settlement fund, which I believe is generally some kind of money market fund. Might want to look under that hood. I don’t believe so. I...

Re: Negative interest rates
In 1927 the CPI dropped 1.7% and didn't turn positive until 1934 when it was 3.1%, a 7-year run without any inflation. (In 1929 it was 0.0%.) It went negative again for two years in 1938 & 1939. (But of course there's nothing like a world war to turn it positive.) So we've had extended periods ...

the problem is you can't spend a closet at the supermarket ... any equity in a house is trapped . it can not come out ... sure you can use it as collateral for loans but today you need the same criteria to get a heloc as a mortgage ... 2008 saw helocs cancelled and closed as well . so i prefer liqui...

Re: Strategically taking a 401k loan and/or no-penalty withdrawal
The loan is actually from assets liquidated in your 401k ... So you don’t get to double dip ,keeping the money invested while borrowing it out and investing it elsewhere Of course. I would have never thought it worked any other way. But if the stock market continues to fall (and eventually just be ...

Re: Strategically taking a 401k loan and/or no-penalty withdrawal
OK, thanks for the added detail. I'm not particularly concerned about any of that, to be honest. I understand that should I take a 401k loan there could be scenarios where I'd suddenly find that I needed to default on the loan and pay the necessary taxes. That would not be my plan, but I'm willing ...
