Re: best BROKER for US and EU

Also worth taking into consideration if equities are held in your name or the broker's name. In Australia it is called CHESS sponsored, I don't know about the US. Interactive Brokers doesn't have segregated user accounts; equities are held in the name of the broker. See this thread (featuring IB): h...

Re: best BROKER for US and EU

To protect yourself against heavy US estate taxes on foreigners, you buy government debt (50% of PP) directly as it is exempted from estate taxes, and you buy Vanguard or iShares S&P500 on a EU exchange (LSE maybe the best). If you are not buying physical, you can also buy Rowland's PP book-rec...

Re: Having another PP for a VP but with a 2:1 leverage (using CFDs)?

My four rules for speculative investing... *Never speculate with money you can't afford to lose. *Never dip into your PP or other dedicated investments to cover speculations that go south. *Never speculate or invest in anything if you don't have a good understanding of how it works and what the ris...

Re: best BROKER for US and EU

No, I don't pay a monthly fee. But my broker is Lynx, custody is IB I pay only for transactions and optional for actual stockprices (but i don't need actual prices). Lynx is in NL, FR, BE en DE (sorry, no portugal) Interesting. How does Lynx compares to IB in overall fees for PP? Maybe Lynx has no ...

Re: PP Heresy: Recommendations for a Boglehead 401k

There is no magic formula. But a common Boglehead portfolio would be an S&P 500 index fund or near equivalent ETF and a total bond market index fund with 1% in bonds for every year of your age up to around 70%.  Some use static allocations like 60/40 or even 50/50 and just rebalance ever couple...

Thanks for your further insights! Let's say I don't give a damn about government backed investor protection for now (it may have its value but let's assume I am not interested for now) but I conclude stronger banks in respected jurisdictions give better protection (HK has a low government guarantee ...

Re: best BROKER for US and EU

Lazy Investor: Thank you! So if I understand correctly, I buy various assets all on IB's platform but different assets on either US or EU markets which is more beneficial tax-wise for each? PS. I just realized we are discussing this in the Variable Portfolio thread. Actually, my very same question a...

Re: best BROKER for US and EU

Please recommend me a broker! I am EU resident but want to invest in a US PP . I am more bullish on the US economy than the EU. And sorry, the notion that if you are from the - UK - invest in the UK - US - invest in the US - Germany - invest in Germany - Russia - invest in Russia, etc. sounds weird ...

So now you have learned what is to be learned about CFDs. I am still looking for a good provider, though.

As I said before this is for your variable portfolio, definitely.

Anyone tried this? At least on paper/computer?

Re: PP Heresy: Recommendations for a Boglehead 401k

Quick question. I did not want to open a new thread. I understand the permanent portfolio is called: the Permanent Portfolio. Simple. But is there a name of a John Bogle Portfolio? Index Funds, etc. But do you have a fancy name for Bogle portfolios like the PP is named? I understand if you adjust th...

Re: Good, inexpensive index fund providers?

I suppose that commodities are too volatile to be formed into a pure mutual fund that has a NAV trade once per day, thus demand for such is not profitable for fund creators. What's a NAV trade ? Net Asset Value trade or what? I don't know. What is your objection to ETF? The spread and trading commi...

Vanguard vs. DFA topic. I understand the BAM alliance may add higher fees to their DFA funds. But pls. correct me in that topic: http://gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/permanent-portfolio-discussion/business-model-of-the-bam-alliance/ In my link there seems to be a cheaper option as well for DFA funds...

So what is the proper name of index funds which are not ETFs? Any gold index funds which are not ETFs? Is there a market or demand for it?

Good, inexpensive index fund providers?

I see many prefer here Vanguard (which I read somewhere is on the more expensive side) in the competition amongst current index fund offerings. How about DFA/IFA? As far as I understand they sell low cost index funds(?). So how do they pay their advisers? Is this a win-win business model for advisers and customers alike?

Sharpe, Sortino, etc.; Standard Deviation or simply CAGR - which to use?

What are Sortino, Sharpe, Omega, etc. ratios? Sure, I can look them up on the Internet but found too complicated. Are they useful at all or just add unnecessary levels of complications? Craig only uses CAGR as a simple measure without standard deviation but is it enough? I don't know. https://web.ar...
