Man, you are right on with that one.

When I read "The Pearl" I was in high school.  Now that I have kids, I think that story would really harsh my Powerball-winning buzz.

Re: The Wisdom of Jack Handey

Those are great.  :)

I remember these bits from Saturday Night Live.  I have this memory of assuming Jack Handey was a made-up character read in Phil Hartmann's voice.  Not true!  I looked up "Jack Handey" only to learn that he's been a real guy all this time.

Re: I don't want to win the Powerball lottery

What I worry about is my family becoming a kidnapping and ransom target.  If you have half a billion dollars, you become a very tempting target for theft and plunder. Yes, I could spend some of the money in order to make my life a fortress.  But I enjoy flying under the radar, and a jackpot like thi...

Re: Lucid Dreaming

I'll have to try the nose-pinch thing, but then again in my dreams I usually don't have any awareness of my body.  I don't think I've ever seen any of my body parts during a dream (hands, arms, feet, legs, reflection).  It's more like a movie shot with a POV camera. Yeah I generally have a first-pe...

Re: Lucid Dreaming

* Last day of high school.  Graduation time!  Except that, for some odd reason, I forgot to take that final year of English.  No graduation for me. These are the worst!   Although I'm sorry for your misery, I'm glad I'm not alone with these.  For me, it's always the day of the final, I've never att...

Re: Lucid Dreaming

We started veering into the area of lucid dreaming in the Garden of Eden thread, and I thought I'd dig up the original lucid dreaming thread and post here. Quick summary of where I stand with lucid dreaming: I really studied up since starting this thread, got way into it, and have had quite a large ...

Re: A Temple in the Garden of Eden?

Wow, 90 lucid dreams, that is incredible!  I'm still recording my dreams, but no lucids. I'm glad you're still recording your dreams!  That's great.  Just bringing back my basic dream recall has been pretty awesome.  It was something I let lie dormant for much of my life and I hadn't realized what ...

Nope, the actual date is much older, like 6000 BC or 10,000 BC.  I don't have a source, but I'm sure its Googleable. :o  Not this again!  I'm having flashbacks! This reminds me of this old thread: http://gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/index.php?topic=2352.msg31365;topicseen#msg31365 Gumby and LoneWo...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

I am! And get this... Despite her initial disgust, I let my wife try the glasses after a few nights of dirty looks and she noticed that using them for even 10 minutes before bed improved her sleep. She actually used to wake up with night terrors, startled and confused, in the middle of the night. (...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

I got my pair of blue wavelength-blocking glasses a while back and I've been enjoying them!  I use them during my period of wakefulness after first sleep.  (Called "wake back to bed" in lucid dreaming circles.)  I've enjoyed being able to do things like read on the Kindle Fire without worrying that ...

Re: New study: United States fares poorly in comparison with other rich countries

This shows the NYTimes' bias so well. Looking at the actual data shows that while car accidents were indeed the #1 killer, "gun violence" is far down the list and drug overdoses are nowhere to be seen: Oops, looks like they forgot about heart disease and cancer. What awful reporting, and what awful...

Hah, yup!  I've been in the iron game for a long time, so I'm pretty familiar with everything that's out there.  I'm going to see if I have the stick-withitude to stay on the 531 for one year and see how much progress I can make.  I'm in cycle II now. Sweet, you can't go wrong there!  I did 10 cycl...

Re: The Permanent Hypertrophy Regime

This is a great article.  I've had it bookmarked for a while now.  Question for a gym noob - is it possible to do any of those compound exercises without a spotter?  The biggest hurdle I have to strength training is that it's difficult if not impossible in this busy time to find someone who is will...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

Good news. I started getting 8 hours of sleep for the past week and I've been having segmented sleep and remembering my dreams. Awesome!!  Does this mean that you found yourself falling into the segmented sleep pattern naturally or did you have to nudge yourself in that direction with other aids li...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

Wait, are you sure that you mean 750 mg of melatonin ?  Holy cow, that is one serious dose!  Even 25 mg is a very large amount.  I take more like 0.75mg-1.5mg if I've had some caffeine and need to get to sleep. Oops, I meant mcg!  :D LOL, cool.  The highest I've gone was 3 mg at bedtime in order to...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

No tolerance that I'm aware of, but I do take 2 days off a week.  I recently tried a new brand and a higher dose (750mg) than what the pineal gland releases naturally and the expected drowsiness has gone away after about a week, so maybe there is tolerance at higher than physiologic doses or the al...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

I will buy it and compare it to the melatonin supplement. Have you used melatonin long-term?  I don't employ it often, and only do so in low doses (<4 mg per week), but I was curious if you had any thoughts on whether tolerance builds up over time.  I hadn't seen strong evidence of it but did run a...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

Very true. Another interesting factoid about segmented sleep is that many people chose to fornicate during their wakeful period between their first and second sleep. I suppose the surge in prolactin had a lot to do with that. Almost makes you wonder if that's how our species traditionally got 'in t...

Re: Are we living inside a computer simulation?

Fun, fun thread.  :) Who is to say that religion and science cannot both be right?  I do believe that it is possible that the technological singularity will occur, and we might be able to make most humans on this planet immortal.  Technological breakthroughs in food cultivation (lab grown meat, etc)...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

So, we might hypothesize that a lifetime of segmented sleep and heightened awakeness cycles would be producing some seriously vivid and meaningful dreams? It's no wonder people were more religious back then — people likely felt much more spiritual  with those kinds of daily experiences. Yes, that's...

If you look at the reviews, you'll notice that many of the users of these $8 glasses are experiencing some major melatonin surges. You put those babies on and before long you feel like turning in for the night without the usual cortisol interference. Ha!  I am loving the idea of these glasses... bu...

Re: Rebalancing... Hormones?

There are times when I naturally wake up at 4:00am, and when this happens I usually have had a Big Dream (as the Jungians call it) which is full of mythological images and meaning.  When I sleep all the way to 7:00am the dreams are usually stupid and/or boring (not the f-ing airport again!), but so...
