Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Nice job trying to cherry pick data. But no. We have less than 200 ICU beds available now, and that's after they activated overflow plans over the last week. Screen Shot 2020-06-30 at 3.13.22 PM.png For proper context, do we know what that same graph looked like this time last year, and the year be...

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

Pugchief, I wonder how exactly the Democrats will manage to do away with debates? I can understand the motivation but that would hardly go unnoticed. My guess is some kind of COVID excuse, like Biden can't leave his basement. It won't look good tho; Biden will look weak. TV shows and podcasts have ...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

I find it amusing that people keep lamenting that mask-wearing has "become so politicized". How can it be otherwise? There is no hard science with which to prove or disprove that mask-wearing makes a difference in slowing down the spread of Cooties-19. It's basically all guesswork, hunches...

Yes, and in what I'm doing, although it is at the other end of the scale in terms of the amount of hardware resources, efficiency is still tremendously important. No one wants to spend a ton of money on persistent memory devices if they can't get the astounding performance that those devices are ca...

Is C++ still used? It’s the primary language I use in my current job. :) In embedded applications (e.g., firmware and software that runs on smartphone modems and other low-power chips) and in video games, the hardware resources are relatively limited and you need to milk every last drop of performa...

Re: All hail the new People's Republic of... CHAZ?

I was referring mainly to the reporters who write about the “mystery”. Seems like they could do a little journalistic legwork on street level to see who’s setting off the fireworks. Maybe they feel it’s unsafe, so they just report on it without doing any basic investigation.

Re: All hail the new People's Republic of... CHAZ?

I’ve heard about that fireworks “mystery”. It seems like it shouldn’t be that hard to solve. Just observe who’s roaming around the relevant neighborhoods at that time of night. Maybe review some security camera footage.

Re: All hail the new People's Republic of... CHAZ?

The most amazing thing about this whole situation is that there are people who think it is going to keep Trump from being re-elected. CHAZ/CHOP specifically, or the BLM protests/riots in general? If you mean CHAZ/CHOP specifically, would the criticism (from conservatives, presumably) be that Trump ...

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

Get docs who agree that masks are worthless and show the proof. This statement particularly caught my eye. Isn't the burden of scientific proof on people who propose the new recommendation or mandate (e.g., mask-wearing) for everyone? Prior to March, not wearing masks in the U.S. was the norm, and ...

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

My sense is many of these states with rising cases lean right, so why on earth would they be in the camp of wanting to potentially over count cases? Perhaps because the CARES Act adds a 20% premium for Covid-19 Medicare patients. I.e., hospitals everywhere have a financial incentive to overcount Co...

Re: Is Trump doing a good job?

The impression I got from Trump's "Kung flu" pun and other edgy comments from his Tulsa rally is that he was doing more than just trying to make his audience laugh. I think he was implicitly making a broader point about free speech. The more Trump exercises his free speech with controversi...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

This study (pre-print abstract only, not yet peer reviewed or published) found something quite interesting and unexpected: Some people infected with SARS-CoV-2 apparently develop T-cell responses to it without the corresponding B-cell antibody production, meaning even though they test negative for S...

Wondering what you all think. I'm thinking that my workplace is going to make the mask wearing a permanent requirement while on campus, which means that by default I'm going to be working from home, and only going in when it's absolutely necessary (e.g. inpatient service or a lab experiment) and on...

They also showed video of the incident at Wendy's in Atlanta where the black man overpowered the police and took one of their tasers and got shot in the back trying to run away. Personally, I don't think they should have shot him in the back like that but it isn't as clear cut as the George Floyd c...

I think everyone should ignore CHAZ. Let the city and state sort it out. And civil court if need be. I would think a property owner in there could sue the city and state, at some point. But otherwise, don’t give them any attention. Hard to argue with that. The whole CHAZ situation with the crude, h...

My Dad used to tell me that all the time but I think it came in the form of "nobody owes you a living". Unfortunately, a majority of Black Americans don't have Dads to tell them that which is probably a big part of the problem. It’s even worse than that: Their single mothers on welfare se...

I'm pretty sure Seattle must have a leftist government. Let them figure out how to deal with it. They have all the answers. I'm pretty sure in a few years time when all the producing-class have left the city they will regret whatever solution they chose. The potential problem with letting leftist c...
