Re: Republican Party and "social issues"
and I do think that if you look at what is happening in society (look at the news any day) we are suffering from people with no moral compass. I disagree. I think that because we are outraged by many things that we see on the news, it actually means that we DO have a pretty strong moral compass. I...

Re: Republican Party and "social issues"
"A moral person acts based on love for their fellow human, not fear of punishment." This is one view. A more expansive view is able to distinguish between perfect and imperfect contrition, when they fail to live up to that standard. "Catholic teaching distinguishes a twofold hatred of...

Re: 401k to be nationalized?
What is your interpretation of the action/agitation by SEIU in setting up RetirementUSA? http://www.retirement-usa.org/our-principles I'm not MT, and he would say this more artfully, but... It is just a website, for goodness sakes. Anyone can set one up to broadcast (pretty much) anything. I think...

Re: 401k to be nationalized?
MT...thanks for you input. When you say its all nonsense, are you saying: -There are no interests who would push this? None that I can see. Members of Congress would get more hostile mail than you can imagine over something like this. No one in Congress would support it. What is your interpretati...

Re: 401k to be nationalized?
MT...thanks for you input. When you say its all nonsense, are you saying: -There are no interests who would push this? -It cannot be achieved either thru legislation, regulation, or executive order? -It would level the financial markets so Obama wouldn't attempt it? (assuming Obama is a rational and...

401k to be nationalized?
This article summarizes what seem to be ominous positioning to push nationalization of retirement accounts by the Obama regime. http://www.wnd.com/2012/11/now-obama-wants-your-401k/ This does not seem to be of immediate importance. Additionally, Jim Sinclair has advised to pull funds from these acco...

Re: Republican Party and "social issues"
Well I am not Christian so saying that the Republicans are more Christian is pretty irrelevant to me. This is quite alright for purposes of this conversation...the religion of any individual is not a concern of mine for this conversation. I am focused, however, with the impact on the Republic cause...

Re: Republican Party and "social issues"
Minor correction: The defense of marriage act is a Bush era act, not Clinton. Bill Clinton never would have signed such a prejudiced bill. By prejudiced, I mean denying rights to an entire class of people. You may wish to update wikipedia w/ the accurate details. "The Defense of Marriage Ac...

Re: Republican Party and "social issues"
Pointedstick...thank you for you in-depth reply If that's the only thing that morality means to you, then yes, you're right. Of course its not the only thing morality means to me. Rather, it is one example of a Democratic plank attacking morality. But I think a whole lot more than opposition to abor...

Re: Republican Party and "social issues"
With regards to that specific quotation, I think that back in the day, morality and religion were viewed almost as synonyms I'm not quick to accept this point...I think the founders were very precise in their language and intent. Most of them were the educated and wealthy class, attorneys, business...

Re: Republican Party and "social issues"
"unbridled by morality and religion" is the real meat of that quote. Abandoning their stance on social issues wouldn't be giving up on morality. Can you objectively say that the republicans are more "moral" than the democrats? Yes. The Republican platform does not advocate plank...

Re: Republican Party and "social issues"
Craig, why would Adams have included "human passions" in the statement rather than just saying "honesty in personal and business dealings"? It seems "morality and religion" covers a much larger range of humanity. Basically, although I don't disagree with you statement, ...

Republican Party and "social issues"
I'm starting this thread, inspired by a suggestion elsewhere, that the GOP essentially abandon "social issues" and just focus on a pure "libertarian" platform...mainly composed of fiscal issues. Especially if you hold this view, I would like to get your thoughts, taking up the wo...

Re: Geographic Diversification --- protect against currency controls / devaluation
A bigger question to me is, how does one proceed? This gets almost no play here on this forum, but I think it is a very important aspect of asset protection. Are there any trustworthy experts a person can go to? How would we do due diligence on them? This topic is covered extensively in the new ...

Re: It's not the end of the world...???
Other countries don't need to refuse dollars for the dollar demand to significantly weaken. So long as countries continue accepting dollars, it shouldn't matter if they exchange Chinese Yuan or sea shells or trinkets with each other. The narrative I'm pointing out is that the reason to hold a given...

Re: Why The PP Will Eventually Fail
The other response that turns me against the PP -- hey, I might as well get it ALL out while I'm at it lol -- is the response about what happens when all correlations go to one and there are bad weeks and months in the PP. The response is to not look at your portfolio. Come on! That is not a re...

Vanguard Wellington is pretty close to the mix above and it lost about 23% for the year in 2008. Vanguard Wellesley is close to 60% bonds and 40% stocks and it lost about 10% in 2008. I just don't like exposure to losses of that size. I can't deal with them. I get too freaked out. I can't think ...
