Re: Bitcoin Mining for Fun and Profit
As much as I like the concept of bitcoin, it's vulnerable to a majority attack. It's too easy to implode the economic value of a bitcoin. As it gets bigger and larger transactions take place, it only gets worse :/ You do realize that as it gets more and more popular, it would be increasingly diff...

Re: Bitcoin Mining for Fun and Profit
Sadly, my brother lost about $65,000 worth of bitcoins because he accidentally deleted his encrypted wallet from DropBox because he didn't recognize the funny filename he had given it and was trying to clear space. With memory as cheap as it is these days, wouldn't it make sense for DropBox to peri...

Re: Bitcoin Mining for Fun and Profit
I think coinbase.com is a pretty good place to buy them. They charge a 1% fee for buying or selling, and you don't need to worry about the spread.flyingpylon wrote: What's the best way/place to just buy a few bitcoins every so often?

Re: Bitcoin Mining for Fun and Profit
It looks like the price has gone parabolic, its over $70 now! Get ready for the inevitable crash. There's also a fork in the blockchain because a large block was mined with v.8 that is incompatible with v.7. They resolved that fork. I agree, it's gotten too valuable, too fast. It might crash aga...

Bitcoin is roughly $65 today. My paltry wallet is now worth $8,450. Sadly, my brother lost about $65,000 worth of bitcoins because he accidentally deleted his encrypted wallet from DropBox because he didn't recognize the funny filename he had given it and was trying to clear space. Oh my. Isn't ...

Re: What do NYC residents think of Michael Bloomberg?
Hi WiseOne, I'm still here, but I choose not to participate because I don't really enjoy all the libertarian fist pumping and rhetoric. I think Bloomberg is a fine mayor and has created a lot of positive change in NYC, to be honest. Personally, I think it's a good idea to have someone that underst...

Re: Bitcoin Mining for Fun and Profit
Despite the title, I guess the correct term is "minted" not "mined." Right? :-\ The correct term is actually mined. Bitcoins are mined by performing very complex cryptographic calculations using a computer. These cryptographic calculations are used to verify the authenticity ...

Re: Bitcoin Mining for Fun and Profit
A friend of mine bought one of those machines that makes them. ("Mines" them?) Needless to say, I keep an offline encrypted wallet now, because I don't want to lose that money due to a virus or hacker. That *is* a concern. It's enough trouble keeping an eye on my credit cards. Bitcoins se...

Re: Bitcoin Mining for Fun and Profit
1 Bitcoin is now worth around $34.60 USD today. The last few months have seen historic rises in BTC value as two things happened: Coinbase offered a simple way to link a US checking account to a Bitcoin wallet and greatly simplified the process of buying and selling bitcoins - it's now as easy as P...

What sort of default rate do you see using this approach? 25% interest seems almost incredible - loan shark worthy, if you will. I don't mean to disparage it, but I think the highest interest rates also show the highest default rates, but perhaps that's simply due to the higher risk profile of the...

Thanks for your perspective on China. I spent a month there and I agree with everything you said. Reub, regarding not using diapers, although it might not be as sanitary for the rest of us, studies have shown that in countries where the mothers don't diaper, it is much easier to potty train the bab...

though it is not exactly meditation, it does have a calming and trance inducing quality to it. Many kinds of so called meditation really induce trance states. Two examples, which shatter this thesis: Ben Shalom Bernanke, Paul Krugman Yet, arguably, they are both leading experts in their field: 1. Example - Ben Bernanke's controversial QE programs have prevented what could have been a deadly depression and instead turned it into a relatively soft extended...

US employee outsources his own job to China
This seems like a pretty smart way of taking advantage of wage arbitrage. Apparently this guy was working at about 5 different local companies and outsourcing all of his software development to Shenyen. If it's good for corporate America, they should have no problem with it, right? http://www.bbc.c...

I closed out these positions flat after ~120 days. Too much volatility. My VP days are over - If I would have stuck with PP I'd probably be up 2-3%, but instead I'm just happy to not have a loss.

It takes approximately 10,000 hours to become an expert in a given field. At a minimum, 1000 hours to get to a level most would consider acceptably knowledgeable. 100 hours might establish a baseline proficiency. Most people are dumb because there aren't enough hours in a human lifetime, and s...
