New I-Bond Rate for 5/1/23 to 10/31/23

It's now official that the new fixed rate for I-Bonds purchased between 5/1/23 and 10/31/23 is .9%. And the composite rate is 4.3%. Here is the Treasury Direct page: https://www.treasurydirect.gov/savings-bonds/i-bonds/ I don't think I will be a buyer during this cycle but it sure is good to see a b...

Re: Good piece on cash by Cullen Roche

The only thing Roche doesn't address here is the possibility of a default in the next few months due to the debt ceiling circular firing squad antics in Congress. Because of that I'm going to wait to pull the trigger on locking in some high yields with a T Bill ladder until after the clown car has ...

Re: Hedging Against U.S. Dollar Losing Global Reserve Status

What would Harry Browne do in this situation? Increase our gold allocation? Add an allocation to international stocks, and if so, how much and which sectors? Decrease our allocation to long-term Treasuries? What about short-term Treasuries? Just kind of stating the obvious, probably, but if the USD...

stuper1, that is a really nice set up if one of your concerns is your wife not rebalancing. Those three funds (VBIAX, VWENX & VWIAX) all have a good mix of stocks & bonds. They kick off a lot of dividends & interest but there are obviously no tax consequences as they are all in either ta...

Re: How much to save for retirement

Re: the CCRC: it sounds like once you're in there's no way out, and if the place starts going downhill you might want a way out. And if all those folks really are captive, there's no incentive for it not to go downhill. Is there any protection against that? Pretty sure that is not the case. You can...

I assume boglerdude and Vinny are both reacting to my "simple" portfolio and not joypog's spreadsheet. When I read your replies I was reminded of a funny exchange I had with a friend years ago where we were both claiming that we did very little lawn maintenance. We then proceeded to list t...

Re: Simplifying fund choices for the PP/GB

I share you concerns about complexity for my wife in the likely event that I kick well before she does. She has her Solo 401k and Solo 401k Roth with Etrade because Fidelity won't support the Roth side of those accounts. All of our other stuff is with Fidelity with the exception of bank accounts and...

Re: How much to save for retirement

A related option is a CCRC (continuing care retirement community). You pay them a large slug of money, presumably from the sale of your home, and in return they charge monthly fees that are usually pretty reasonable and promise to take care of you for life. You usually buy into these in your early ...

Ocho, you just use the momentum strategy in tax-deferred and Roth accounts, right? Otherwise, assuming that losses are not regularly offsetting gains, you would end up paying more taxes due to lots of transactions.

Re: I'M OUT!

The US has declined in some ways, but to me it still looks like the best horse in the glue factory. It will survive and, perhaps after stumbling for a bit, it will find its footing and rise again. I might not be as optimistic about rising again, but frankly I see no other option. Where else would o...

Re: I'M OUT!

Nothing wrong with taking a step back when you feel that things are out of whack. Best move in that situation is to move your net worth to risk free assets that will return the risk free rate - and then reconnoiter. If you have the suspicion that the system is broken, but you don't yet know how or ...

Re: Defensive moves when lunatics are running the asylum?

Just so we're absolutely clear, we're primarily talking about the debt ceiling debate and how that might play out, right? Sure, there will be a lot of posturing and maybe some actual productive debate, but I don't see the US government being shut down for a prolonged period nor the US defaulting on ...

I may need to loan large amounts of cash to my mother to fund her Alzheimer's care, as most of her assets are tied up in illiquid investments. So I can easily imagine a scenario in the next few years requiring me to sell a lot of stocks. BTW it does help that I'm over age 59.5 and can draw from the...

It is unwatchable for me, and I agree with their positions. This pretty much sums it up for me. Some of the people they have on in the afternoon seem decent and sometimes informative, but the entire evening crew (Carson Hannity, Ingraham, etc.) is filled with vitriol. To be clear, I can't stand CNN...

I can't help noticing how many people on this forum are parking a portion of their cash in i-bonds. These are 20-year bonds, right? I'm trying to think through what would happen to an i-bond purchased today at a relatively high rate of interest if rates suddenly plummeted and the Fed went back into...

I've been with Fidelity for at least 25 years and they've been great overall. My ONLY issue with them in that time is that they will not "host" a Solo 401(k) Roth account. Wife and I are both self-employed and had to go to another firm (we choose TDA) to open those a while back. I'm also i...

Re: Liquidate Some Roth Space to Buy Physical Gold?

My take is don't surrender Roth space unless you really need to. As mentioned a couple of times upthread, you can't get that back when it's gone. I think that trumps anything else in your situation. So many people get to "retirement age" and regret that they don't have a higher percentage ...
