Re: Computer games - then & now
Choplifter. Battle Zone. Anything Infocom. Wow those were some good ones. I'll add Dr J and Larry Bird Go One On One, Archon, Red Baron, Pole Position, Karate Champ, Pirates, Defender of the Crown, Qbert...probably a zillion others. The good old Commodore 64... The arcade near my high school gave ou...

Re: Coronavirus Conspiracy Theories
There must be thousands of researchers examining this virus. Could some of them tell if it was engineered? Yes, they can tell if was engineered. It wasn't. Check the article I posted earlier in this thread. (We don't seem to have post numbers here, or I would just say look at post #...) https://www...

Re: How are gold ETFs trading with normal spreads?
Since it doesn't appear that there is any gold available, even in 400 oz. good delivery bars, at less than about a 6% spread, how can IAU (as an example) trade at a normal spread of a few cents per share? Does that mean that they don't actually buy and sell gold when people buy and sell shares? May...

I posted this elsewhere. Rather than provide merit to nonsense conspiracy theories, we could consider this: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/03/200317175442.htm Science done by people who do it for a living every day, and actually understand things like virology, immunology, microbiology, ...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion
In retrospect, "contrived" was a poor choice of words. I don't deny that hospitals are overwhelmed, but I do question what brought us to this point and what interests were being advanced by having a nation on lock-down and the world economy at a virtual standstill. So perhaps the term &qu...

So that must have been the major source of my equity losses? It was bad enough looking at the total losses that I did not examine each component's performance. Bot of my handful of Vanguard Index funds, two of them are the Value and Small Cap Value funds. Vinny I have no doubt that your SCV is gett...

Re: Is Denninger right about the coronavirus?
Interesting post from Denninger this morning. I don't know enough to agree or disagree, but it's an interesting hypothesis about COVID-19 being an attenuated virus from an unfinished vaccine for SARS or MERS. https://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?singlepost=3524114 Of course it has that unmistakable &...

Re: I pulled the trigger
So at the moment I am fairly pleased about having done this switch to a GB-ish portfolio. As of today, I am down 5.29% on the year, and basically I made the switch right at the start of the year. If I had stuck with my old portfolio, I would be down something like 20-25%. And I would be WAY more ups...

[... I'm not sure what the alternatives are, though... you still have to trade. I believe, according to that guy and some others I have seen, limit orders are the way to go. That doesn't guarantee NAV but it guarantees you get the price you want ( I think!) But I am hardly an authority on this.

... If you use a Market On Close MOC order, you don't get exposed to this spread... You just exactly get the closing price, like a mutual fund. Thanks to my friend Paul Novell for edumicating me on that. FYI, You may want to reconsider that. Or maybe you are right... I'm not going to attempt to exp...

Re: How do you invest the gold portion?
Hi Vinny, I did read your earlier post, but I also read some recommendations of AAAU from 2-3 others. Vinny, you cite the fact that GLD has "far and away the most assets." I apologize for being so ignorant, but what does that really mean, and why might that be a major reason for choosing ...

WEB archive FAQ links
I think the wayback machine has messed things up. The links to the old FAQs are no longer working. At least, for gold and stocks they aren't.

So let me get this straight...
You can't get gold coins anywhere, or else at a very high premium, yet gold prices are going going nowhere???
How can this be?

Re: The GOLD scream room
Help me understand. A world crisis and the Fed basically announces another QE (assuming this weakens the dollar) and gold prices crater???? This certainly seems like it would be one of those times that gold skyrockets. Instead the opposite. Again, who can predict what will happen? Not many of us, f...

Re: How to know the Intraday value of funds for rebalancing
Mutual funds transact at today's EOD price, after markets close. You can look at similar etfs to get an idea of "current" nav but really there isn't one until the end of the day. If you put in a buy order today before close, you will buy it at the nav that is calculated at the end of today.

Re: PP Inspired Leveraged Portfolios
Kbg,
I'm confused by the many variations discussed over multiple years / threads.
What is your current allocation for a leveraged PP - and is it a fixed "non tactical" type?

Shows what I can predict, but I really thought gold might take off with this panic selling, oil prices plummeting, global pandemic thing we've got going on.
So far, not at all.

Re: FNBGX vs. individual bonds at Fidelity
I ended up using this as my LTT purchase. It has a very slight percentage in some shorter duration bonds compared to TLT, but it is a small difference. As others noted it has a silly cheap expense ratio. I find mutual funds to be so much easier to deal with so I went with this over TLT.

20% S&P 500
20% SCV
20% LTT
20% STT
15% Gold in IAU
5% in a stable value fund

I pulled the trigger
After countless hours staring at pie charts, speadsheeting, and reading books and articles... I have reallocated my 401k into a slightly modified GB (with 15% in gold and the leftover 5% in a stable value.) Hopefully it doesn't all blow up! :o I have up until this point been nearly all in equities. ...
