Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
Similarly for cash I would use Dutch short term bills/bonds. Rates are negative -0.6% but that is an insurance against bank failures. Apparently the market thinks this risk is high. Physical gold storage costs more than that. Thanks for this tip, and the rest of the comment. For some reason, my bro...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
Your rational, logical, legitimate fear of long-term European sovereign debt instruments isn't actually a fear about BONDS the fear that you are expressing in your posts does not strike me as the fear of someone who is merely afraid that LTT will be a losing asset (you seem to accept that this is h...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
From the context, it seems to me that Craig was concerned about interest rate risk related to the duration of the bonds, rather than about their Euro origin. Thanks for pointing that out. So I did some reading elsewhere, and re-read the topic where Craig and MachineGhost were commenting. And it see...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
Just a quick note; reading through the comments, I realized I'm missing some fundamentals here. I'm going to do some reading before replying, but just wanted to pop in and say I'm very grateful for the responses!

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
If it wasn't LTT that you were worrying about, it would be one of the other core PP asset classes. I have no problem buying gold when its price is going down. After all, it's part of the plan. I do have severe doubts when Craig says that he wouldn't buy European bonds. Now you may simply say: no ma...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
I'd just go with something simple like 40% IEGA But how does that fix my (and other people's) worries about the low yield of long-bonds and its associated risks? What happens to this allocation if the euro appreciates for example a 20% to the level where it was just 3 years ago? 3 of the 4 assets h...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
Some good points about the Euro PP history -- however the question remains: should I get into bonds at this point. The topic from October 2016 had a general consensus that I shoudn't, and that sentiment is repeated here. So, I've been re-reading that older topic, and here is a possible alternative: ...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
IBCL I saw that one, but how does that help me? Sorry, my intention was not to discourage by any means. Because of the peculiar relationship between USD and gold that is in the very core design of PP It's just the way it is! Gotta think about it for a bit, and I think I'll follow your advice in thi...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
Very discouraging answers... I don't want to create my own kind of asset allocation. It feels half-baked to me. After reading the book, the strategy seems clear and simple. But when it's time to implement, question marks pop up at a very basic level. I do have a pension that's indeed about 10K per y...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
Just wanted to say two things. When LT bond yields are so low, the basic problem (as I understand it) is that there is less upside potential than downside potential. Thanks for clarifying that. I guess I have to think about it for a bit. The second thing that I wanted to say is that the thread you ...

I've read it, and although thorough, that piece is from 2014.Kike Moreno wrote:Its conclusion: stay with German bonds, or maybe Dutch, Finnish or Austrian bonds, and avoid the rest.

Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
So I'm starting a European PP, and in my last topic I was looking into the stocks part of the PP. Now I'm looking at the bonds part, and things are very confusing for me. When I read the (2012) book, things look really simple for a European: get German bonds and be done with it. But I've done some r...

Re: Starting in Europe, questions
Got the stocks and gold part decided. For now, I'll put 6k in each 25%. For stocks, I'll put 3k in iShares Core EURO STOXX 50 (ticker CSX5), which is accumulating. The other 3k, I'll put in Think European Equity (ticker TEET which I'm going to proncounce exactly the way I like it). That last one is ...

Re: Starting in Europe, questions
try to mix different ETFs to each catergory Almost would've forgotten that, I will. Still have to do the calculations on the Dutch dividend taxes. Sidenote; I was complaining to my SO over dinner, and she asked why I didn't simply pass it on to a financial advisor and be done with it. Told her that...

Re: Starting in Europe, questions
I'll try to answer your questions. Excellent answers, thanks! As for stocks, based on TER I'm looking at iShares Core Euro STOXX 50. It's decently sized, has full physical replication, and crazy low TER. I'd like to compare that to something like Think European Equity. This is by far the smallest f...

Re: Starting in Europe, questions
OK, so I used justetf.com, which allows you to search and compare funds. I've selected the funds that you guys pointed me to, and when comparing those, I found a couple of differences. Couple of questions; Fund size ranges from 358 to 5651m. Does this matter? Some give dividends, some return it. Imp...

Starting in Europe, questions
I'm a 40-something living in The Netherlands and need to start taking care of my pension. So I've read the book and with about 25k, I'd like to make further steps towards implementing PP. For starters, I've opened an account with a broker. After reading the book, I feel the principles are simple and...
