Re: Portfolio Rebalace Notifier

I feel like I'm missing something here... why do we need to mess with Linux? I have my Google sheets with conditional formatting, so I know I need to rebalance if the cell turns red. I could add a script that would run daily/hourly/whatever and send me rebalancing alerts, but so far rebalancing hasn...

Re: Question for original forum members

I joined the forum in 2010 after discovering the famous thread on BH forum with lots of gems from Craig and MT. Initially I had 50% in pure PP in IRAs and taxable and another 50% in a PP-like portfolio in my 401k. Some of you might remember my whining about bad 401k with no gold, no LTTs, and a sole...

Re: New trendfollowing ETF planned for Q2 2017

Another interesting ETF with even lower ER of 0.25% is Meb Faber's GAA: http://beta.morningstar.com/etfs/BATS/GAA/quote.html The problem with these niche products is they may or may not gain interest and the bid/ask ratio is high due to tiny trade volume. It'll be interesting to see how VMOT will be...

Re: Trump's Effect on the PP

I'm sure some will say go to a different allocation, etc, but the split I have right now "feels" right for me, and that's the most important thing: 25% total market 5% small cap 5% emerging market 25% TLT 25% gold 5% silver That's a fine allocation. Are the numbers correct? Looks like 10%...

Harry Browne now available at the Kindle Store

I've just received an email from Pamela Browne with the announcement that all HB books are now available in Kindle format on Amazon. It was great to see the Craig and MT's book also listed!

Re: Low-cost smart phone plans

I use T-Mobile's $30/mo plan with 100 minutes and 5 GB of LTE data per month (in the US.)  This works on any modern unlocked smartphone. You may need a Skype unlimited account (for about $3/mo) if you make a lot of calls.  I tend to use Skype to make all of my outgoing calls and save my 100 minutes...

Re: Good things do happen to bad 401k plans!

Really?  I thought TLT was the best, the strictest about having just US Treasuries and nothing else.  No longer the case? See http://gyroscopicinvesting.com/forum/bonds/tlt-considered-harmful/ So even though the claim is TLT holds "only" 20+ year treasuries, it actually holds about 60% 20...

Re: Elm Funds

I just wondered if there was something specific about them that drew your attention. I have no opinion on Elm, never heard of them. Their FAQ makes it clear that they won't mess with smaller clients: For our US private fund, the minimum investment is $2mm, for our Separately Managed Accounts at Fide...

Re: Good things do happen to bad 401k plans!

Are there any other Vanguard or non-Vanguard funds worth consideration? Please share your thoughts. Of course!  The funds that would be necessary to make a Permanent Portfolio!  So, top needs: TLT GLD / IAU / SGOL SHV / SHY, though VFISX may serve the same purposes close enough. You would also do w...

Re: Good things do happen to bad 401k plans!

Congratulations foglifter!  That is some serious perseveration. You can use VUSTX, VTSMX, and either vanguard prime or VFISX plus the brokerage window to make up your PP.  You might want to get the Vanguard Treasury MM included - it's closed to new investors now but one day (over the rainbow) it wi...

Re: Good things do happen to bad 401k plans!

Congratulations for continuing to fight for a good 401k.  The choices you listed sound great, and I can't think of any other Vanguard choices I'd include.  I'm curious, what will the total ER be for a TSM fund in your new 401k? We won't get the institutional shares unfortunately,  so it'll be Admir...

Good things do happen to bad 401k plans!

Many of you might recall a number of topics I started here and in the Stocks section at different times over the last 3 years whining about our bad 401k plan. Things changed just as I gave up on my eternal battle for a better plan. It took a loss of a number of key employees, creating a company prof...

dualstow, I've seen you post this before and I definitely wish I could take advantage of your excellent tips!  However I have a mac and it seems unable to do queries (mac-ism for "import html").  Something about needing to install an ODBC driver.  I'm not crazy about installing an SQL dat...

Re: Price updates when owning bonds directly

Although I have google drive sheets with specific bond prices set up with the help of members like fnord, I usually just look at what TLT is doing during the day. It's not perfect, but it's as good as going to the Wall Street Journal and reading about bonds. dualstow, could you share the formula yo...

Re: TLT considered harmful

I do have Treasuries at Fidelity as part of my bond allocation. I'm just trying to figure out how to use my HSA funds in PP. Based on what rickb mentioned IEI has the same bond-loaning issues as TLT. Perhaps I could just keep a reduced %% of EDV to compensate for extra volatility and avoid IEI at a...

Re: TLT considered harmful

I hope my question justifies bringing this thread back to life (temporarily). Am I over-engineering here? Should I just sell EDV and simply buy TLT?  :-\ You could just use Fidelity and buy Treasuries for free as sophie pointed out, or you could use Schwab and buy TLO for free.  TLO may be safer th...

Re: TLT considered harmful

I'm aware of the goodness of individual bonds and I do buy them directly in my other account, which is a Fidelity IRA. This account has limitations as it acts as a brokerage window in my HSA account. I can't move the money from it anywhere and I don't want to use it for anything but Treasury bonds t...

Re: TLT considered harmful

I hope my question justifies bringing this thread back to life (temporarily). Part of my bond allocation is in a tax-deferred TD Ameritrade account, hence both TLT and EDV are available commission-free. Since TLT has been deemed problematic I've been buying EDV over the last few years. Now that the ...

Re: Brokerage Firm as Your Bank

Not clear if this is what you were thinking but Fidelity actually has a banking service through UMB bank. I use it as my bank, depositing both mine and my wife's paychecks into it and paying all my bills from it. Makes it really easy to transfer from your bank to/from any Fidelity account. All ATM ...
