Re: Go full in or pay off mortgage?
I rent so my ideas may not hold much weight but here are some thoughts. Pros: The guaranteed 2.8% return You won't be leveraged ( this can be a pro or con depending on the market but it feels like more of a pro for me ) Cons: Do you have to pay taxes to get the 189k for the payoff? You probably alre...

Tipping
/rant I am sick of tipping. I wish we could just be done with it and price it all in. I feel like everywhere I go now has a place for a tip that just makes me feel awkward. Clark Howard brought it up not long ago and it struck home with me: http://www.clarkhoward.com/clark-struggles-with-tipping-gui...

I recently had to clean someone's malware invested computer and had to go beyond malware-bytes. It seems like it used to be so much better. It looks like it is only for the first $5,000 and the only way to get the money out is with their prepaid debit card.
If it was at least $10,000 I might consider it.

Internet is $54 for 50 mbps
Local channels plus HBO and other on demand content is $16 more
I can't justify 'cutting the cord' for that price.
This isn't a promotion either, it is the normal price.

Re: Help me choose a secondary computer
If you are really serious about going Linux, the most user friendly release of Linux is a Chromebook. It is more user friendly than Windows if you are okay with the limitations. I have never been able to get on the Apple band wagon because I feel like I am paying more for something that can do less....

Re: Help me choose a secondary computer
I would personally buy a bargain Windows 8.1 laptop with a credit card that gives you an extra 1 year warranty. You can uninstall their extra software easily. The technology changes so fast that if it dies after 2 years so what. If it dies after 1 year, the credit card company might just refund you ...

You know anything about these lottery bonds? https://www.riksgalden.se/en/savings/Premieobligationer/ I couldn't find the duration but they guarantee your principal back and guarantee returns if you buy enough. Also, the National Debt Savings seems like a good place for cash. https://www.riksgalden....

Re: EE bonds as portion of bonds (not cash)
I am youngish with about 30 years until standard retirement age so I am only accumulating. The way I understand the 30 year bonds is that you are locking whatever rate you buy them at. Their advantage is that you can sell this rate if rates go lower. If the rates go higher, you have still locked in ...

Thanks for the info barrett. I learned something I didn't know reading your links. I learned I bonds can also be used for education tax free and I also didn't realize that you need to use principal plus interest to get the full benefit. We are getting closer to that 3.00% mark for 30 year treasuries...

Re: Real Estate in the PP
I think I have seen Craig suggest real estate as an alternative to gold if gold was illegal.
If your PP was big enough, a portion of your gold could be real estate. The maintenance cost would be like your gold storage cost.
I wouldn't want to have leveraged real estate as part of the PP.

What brokerage are you using?
I was pleasantly surprised to see the values update daily on the bonds I hold through Vanguard.
I would imagine the bonds are priced on the current interest rates.

Re: EE bonds as portion of bonds (not cash)
I see what your saying. The volatility would be higher without the market price for the EE bonds changing with rates. The portfolio value could drop a lot quicker with the current value of the EE bonds until they hit 20 years and get a big payday. If rates do drop that low though I think I would be ...

Re: EE bonds as portion of bonds (not cash)
I have been thinking about this more as 30 year treasuries have been dropping. If 30 year treasuries get to 3.00 % again, I am going to swap as much as I can to EE bonds. I see it as a win win situation. If 30 year treasuries stay below 3.5 %, I earn the same if not better in the long run. If 30 yea...

I understand the capital gains collectable rate as a cap. If your regular tax rate is lower than the capital gain caps, you use your regular tax rate. http://www.irs.gov/publications/p17/ch16.html#d0e56153 If you figure your tax using the maximum capital gain rate and the regular tax computation res...
