Re: What causes the Permanent Portfolio to go down?

IIRC correctly both MG and I came up with something close to high 20s% MaxDD (e.g. 28-29% or something like that) when using daily data. That is my personal worse case for planning purposes. It should be noted that this occurred when gold went vertical and then crashed in the early 80s. All you had...

Re: Maintaining Coding Skills During Break

Very cool, PS. Thanks to you and everyone at the project for all the great work. I think KDE is far underrated. In my salad days I used to run Gentoo and compile everything locally. Nowadays I'm on Debian stable. I don't have much (any!) spare time to devote to custom versions of packages. So it'll ...

Re: Maintaining Coding Skills During Break

Smithy, would you work on the per-screen scaling factors? That would be really handy because I have a small HiDPI laptop connected to a big honkin' monitor at home. I need a lot more scaling on the laptop. Thanks! :-)

Re: 600 Members Coming Up

My guess is that the raw member count is more influenced by the number of bots able to sign up than anything else. Maybe there's some useful way to figure out which accounts are real. Or at least exclude the accounts that have been banned for being bots from the graph of members over time.

Re: Maintaining Coding Skills During Break

You should consider contributing to free software projects. Not only will it keep your skills sharp, but you'll make connections, build a really interesting portfolio, and none of your work will be hidden by NDAs or anything. PointedStick IIRC is some kind of bigwig now at the KDE project. He might ...

I've never fired a gun before in my life. I've got mixed feelings about carrying one everyday if I lived in a place that allowed it. It seems to me that the use of a gun, even for legitimate self-defence purposes almost always results in bad consequences for the user somehow. The legal ramification...

Re: Homelessness on the Rise?

I read an article somewhere by a guy who had a period of homelessness in his life. He said he made camp outside of town, and had plenty of time to hike into town (and back) to conduct his business. He said it was more considerate of everyone than camping in town, and (IIRC) in some ways easier on hi...

When it goes wrong, it goes BADLY wrong. I don't see how the risk is worth switching from contacts, which really give excellent vision.

I'm in a similar situation, Vinny: almost always contacts. Got some glasses from Zenni and I think they're great. Lots of interesting options. I sprang for the oleophopic coating, mostly because young'uns are likely to get their hands on them. But you can also go very cheap. I got a backup pair for ...

Don't forget the publicly made a solemn vow to each other and to God to stay married until one of them dies. Not a vow to stay together until they thought they might be happier doing something else.

Re: Too bad George Orwell isn't around to see this

Impeaching for something that isn't a crime would be a terrible precedent. How would a President even know whether something he's doing is impeachable or not, if he can be impeached for something that's legal? Fortunately, I don't think it's true. Surely there has to be a crime for somebody to be im...

If they see you doing it they will turn it over to authorities to find out why you are breaking your agreement and trying to hide cash and gold knowing it is forbidden . In addition to dualstow's question of how, I'm wondering what authority would care about this, and exactly what the remedy would ...

This sounds like a complete disaster for privacy, but it's an interesting idea. WiseOne (or Adam... Any other MDs?), it seems like automatic transcription of conversations would free up a lot of time you spend writing up notes. How big a deal could this be? https://www.engadget.com/2019/12/02/amazon...

In Spanish and other Latin-derived languages, an "-a" suffix indicates the feminine. A group consisting entirely of Hispanic women are said to be "Latina". When there's at least one man in a group, it goes to the default "Latino". This means that there isn't a way to de...

How is that pronounced out loud? Does it sound like "lynx" or like "DirectX"?
