Re: What Did You Learn From 2008?

As Clive notes, the permanent portfolio isn't the only game in town, but it does what few strategies seem to be able to do reliably: it protects the investor from himself while ALSO delivering nice gains. Also the only strategy that could have been hand knitted by your Grandmother and makes you thi...

Re: Ubuntu-- Still Not Ready For Prime Time

Like them or loath them, it seems that the only innovation going on on the desktop is in the linux distros.

I like to give my kids a choice of OS, but although they are happy enough using Ubuntu and OS X I always find them booted into Win 7. Meh.

Re: What Did You Learn From 2008?

You all were far more compos mentis than me. I still remember the shock and awe when I opened my bi-yearly investment statement in late 2008. The only thing I did right was not selling, but that was more to do with shock than judgement. On reflection the thing that kept me out of trouble and I what ...

Re: Podcast - 2011-04-03 - Cash and the Permanent Portfolio

Gambling and investing are also often seen in totally different lights. I had a job once where I interviewed lots of pro and semi - pro "gamblers", probably the most scarily self disciplined bunch you could imagine. As Clive has said these people don't gamble in the sense that we might me...

Re: The Permanent Career

Try not to worry, things change just never at the speed that you want them to. Always remember that your education is your own personal achievement that can't be taken from you by people or circumstance.  Jobs however are ephemeral things given and taken by things outside your control, best not to e...

Re: "The Myth of Diversification or How to Really Diversify"

Where were all the educational pieces on non correlation 4 years ago? Perhaps I was just looking in the wrong places, or didn't care enough when the going was good.

This is one thread that I don't know how to take, googling "Anti NWO" was an education though, thanks.

Re: invest today or wait

I'm 1/3 into a phased entry into a PP, no particular rationale for my timescale it's just what made me feel most comfortable at the time. As MT mentions for some people e.g. me, it's important not to take a hit early on and risk losing confidence. I'd say that none of the things that were worrying m...

Re: Lots of Permanent Portfolio Noise Out There

Looking at google's search term trending thingy, there's lots more people out there looking for pp information now than there ever was. http://www.google.com/trends?q=permanent+portfolio&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all Unfortunately a lot of what you find when first searching is rather intense s...

IMO the barbell is the better choice if starting the PP at a relatively high interest rate time point, whilst a ladder is potentially better if starting from a relatively low interest rate time point.
Clive, I'd like to understand this, could you step me through the rationale, please ?

Re: How Well Can You Stomach Success?

Good story Gumby My 'got lucky' story is similar in timescale and gains, except that the initial investment was a very significant chunk of my net worth. After 4 scary nightmare years of trying to build back a cash cushion I was able to sell 33% of my investment. Good times. Not wanting to have repe...
