Re: Ray Dalio on Bonds

Don't disagree at all on a personal expenditures level. However, when we are talking about bonds and associated interest rates no one gives a crap about your personal economy, completely irrelevant. If I wanted to spend the time looking I'm sure I could find 4 things that price wise went the other d...

Re: Ray Dalio on Bonds

given a choice between deflation and inflation , the fed would shift the odds greatly over to inflation . we are already on an inflationary path as far as the fed goes that is really the crux of the quandary.. so much is going on that is inflationary . remember that steady interest rate is already ...

It has been a while since an official update...so let's do one. My personal mix has changed this year: Start: 60% VGSH, 20 TQQQ, 10 TMF, 10 UGLD Then: 55% VGSH, 20 TQQQ, 10 TMF, 15 DGP (adjustment for the demise of UGLD) Now: VGSH 35%, UST 30%, TQQQ 25%, DGP 5%, VIXY 5% I will ignore the "Start...

Re: Ray Dalio on Bonds

Another way to consider LTTs LTTs are good for deflation and hopefully are a counter when stocks tube...but ultimately a bond ride is as stated before. You can expect the i-rate of the bond. So given that. Steady - the interest rate Deflation - Some cap gains Inflation - Some cap losses So an argume...

Re: Ray Dalio on Bonds

I think the answer to your question depends on what your objectives are and if you plan on adhering to the PP framework. If safety is your concern, then I think it is what it is and you dial down on LTTs and reallocate to cash primarily and then stocks/gold. If return is your concern, then I think y...

Re: Interesting Options Risk-Hedging Strategy

How about marrying up a short etf as protection? Do even 1x short funds suffer decay? I feel like I’ve asked this. Ride up, sell the long, ride down, sell the short. Not 50/50, maybe 90 long 10 short? Why is this sounding good to me right now. Not thinking straight. Edit: Even 1x short funds rebala...

Re: Interesting Options Risk-Hedging Strategy

The two graphs toward the bottom capture the basics pretty well. Give up some upside for a reduction in downside. The main thing is to try and avoid expensive times when you buy options...buy insurance when NOT needed vs. close to need. By then it’s too late and you will likely not do well. Also...s...

What about proportional electoral college? A couple states do that already, so there must be some constitutional way around the normal method? Yes, any state that wants to award their electoral votes proportionately is free to do so. And I heartily recommend that California lead the way by awarding...

That’s a good idea, though I would argue for a higher limit. Saving for retirement shouldn’t be so ridiculously complex in terms of legal mechanisms to do so. I’m currently contributing to 4 different numerical alphabetic combinations. I just hope I don’t die before I retire and can consolidate as m...

Playing devil's advocate, Why do only democrats have to pay for things? Last few President's, growth of the deficit goes up under Republicans, down under Democrats. Gone up bigly under current administration. One of my favorite political quotes ever: When it comes to the federal budget Democrats li...

Re: Bonds and the PP -- still make sense?

If LTTs are such a bad deal, why do they get snapped up? Presumably because one of the entities snapping them up (or planning to) is the Fed, and they are doing so not because it’s a good deal for them, but because it helps keep long-term rates low for government borrowing. https://www.reuters.com/...

It will be interesting to see how things change. History shows thing go mostly back to normal with some changes to pre-event norms. I kind of hope we will become a little more Asian with regard to masking when sick (flu/colds). It's not a big deal to do and it does mitigate the spread of aerosol bor...

I could be completely wrong, but I've thought for at least a decade you would see the national debt being monetized in some form or fashion. I thought the initiator would be social security and medicare as the boomer generation goes through old age which of course has only been a partially right ans...

I think the counterpoint is that there are probably just as many Americans who think the other side has way overreacted and it's hard to argue the data is not bearing that out now. The tragedy of this whole thing is how it could have been very different if it wouldn't have been politicized by both p...

Thanks! I was buying T-bills in my Schwab account but they (understandably) stopped offering automatic rollover when rates got close to zero. I imagine Treasury Direct doesn’t offer that either but if I just buy 6-12 month bills it isn’t a big hassle to do my work own. They do sort of...have your b...

I think the real question is why does one care if it is over valued (even grossly so)? If you are a value investor, then it has probably been a company you've never invested in. If you are an index holder then you should remember you are buying a methodology not X# of stocks. If you are a momentum i...
