Re: How to Deal with Dumb People
Two examples, which shatter this thesis: Ben Shalom Bernanke, Paul Krugman Yet, arguably, they are both leading experts in their field: 1. Example - Ben Bernanke's controversial QE programs have prevented what could have been a deadly depression and instead turned it into a relatively soft extended...

Re: Biggest Event in Gold since 1971?
However I still think it shows that gold is not the "worthless" metal people believe because these major central banks certainly think it's important to hold in their reserves. Someone claiming gold is "worthless" is either woefully ignorant or a propagandist. Your cartoon illus...

Re: US employee outsources his own job to China
My company already does this, essentially. They use U.S. engineers as program managers and outsource FEA, CAD modeling, drawings, and other analysis work. It's not a bad system. How does the next generation learn the ropes to become project managers? What happens to the company's market for their ...

Re: Where is the Inflation?
The inflationists' mostly unasked and unanswered question is IMHO: Where will the consumers get the money to pay the higher prices that would accompany significant and sustained increases in the rate of inflation? The answer, of course, is through rising wages or expanding credit levels, neither of...

Re: Biggest Event in Gold since 1971?
I've seen they're to pull all the gold from France...I didn't see how much they want from NY Fed? They are requesting half, so about 1500 tonnes from NY Fed. Scratch that, I think the news is still trying to be distilled. Last I read it is 300 tonnes from NY and 374 tonnes from Paris. http://www...

LTT during great depression...did this balance the crash of the stock market?
I was just reading that the S&P declined 85% during the Great Depression. I then found this chart to look at the 30 year bond. http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2011/03/200-years-of-us-government-bond-yields/ Suppose an investor during that period (late 20s thru WWII) held 50% stock market & 50% ...

Re: Biggest Event in Gold since 1971?
"The move marks an extraodinary breakdown in trust between leading central banks..." This is a key point, I think, even if NY Fed delivers all the German gold requested when they want it. I read somewhere that a big part of the 2008 crisis was banks not trusting other banks for (overnight?...

Re: Biggest Event in Gold since 1971?
I'm wondering if this creates a buying opportunity in some way, such as a gold fund priced in euros. I doubt it would as the gold is not going on the market and the news is already out. Plus unfortunately the sources of the news so far tend to use a lot of hyperbole in these matters (ZeroHedge, etc...

I'm highly skeptical of this notion of spending lots of time on something makes you an authority/expert. Two examples, which shatter this thesis: Ben Shalom Bernanke, Paul Krugman You can be "expert" and still have all the wrong answers. I thikn it a huge mistake to treat people like this ...

Re: Could Cash be the best asset in 2013 through 2014?
systemskeptic...2009 would have been a great entry point for this portfolio. It seems like you reject the philosophy of the PP, in particular the caution against looking at assets in isolation. I share that temptation, as I expect most investors do. However, seeing the LTT performance in 2008/2009 a...

Re: Could Cash be the best asset in 2013 through 2014?
I swapped the Cash portion for Gold, and the LTT portion for Foreign Equities, so it ends up something like 30% Foreign Equities, 20% Domestic Equities, 50% Gold. I find this fascinating. PP 2.0 or PP for QEternity ? What is your rebalance strategy, if any? What are the theoretical underpinnings of...

The problem with American Libertarianism of the Cato Institute, Von Mises, Ayn Rand variety is that it appears to advocate preserving government protection of the corporate big-firm capitalist structure, while at the same time removing any social or organizational protection for citizens and worker...

I almost hate to ask, but... how does a loser like Jacob manage to attract that many seemingly professional women when they're picky as hell to begin with? What am I missing? I got the impression he was lying. It would have been interesting to interview the women he was with, to see if they were...
