Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Differently: I’d make Tony Fauci the virus czar... In related news, Fauci is all for the Europe travel ban. https://twitter.com/kyledcheney/status/1238094994424111104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1238094994424111104&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fhotair.com%2Farchives%2Fed-morrissey%...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Trump’s travel ban sidesteps his own European resorts Talk about a stretch. With a massive outbreak in Italy, restricting travel from the countries with an open border agreement with Italy makes sense. To imply that the decision was based on Trump property locations exemplifies everything that is w...

Re: The GOLD scream room

Shows what I can predict, but I really thought gold might take off with this panic selling, oil prices plummeting, global pandemic thing we've got going on. So far, not at all. There are always way more factors that affect markets than you think. Gold itself may be more valuable than ever, but leve...

Re: Stock scream room

And a wash sale, while annoying, isn't disastrous. It just means you don't get to take the loss now. Unless it's a wash sale where you bought the same security in an IRA. Then you lose the loss completely. Be careful! BTW, that's one more good reason to turn off automatic reinvestment of dividends....

Re: Stock scream room

Also, VBR is down 9.28%. Are we going to hit -10% in one day? I literally just tax harvested IJS losses into this last week. Almost time to harvest this again... any other recommendations on worthwhile SCV ETF's that can be shuffled into if we continue to plunge? VB is a good option. It's small cap...

Re: Golden Butterfly rebalancing bands

Since LittleDinghy already has a portfolio set up and is looking for rebalancing advice, I was thinking more tax planner or CPA rather than an investment advisor.

I've not used a tax advisor before. Do you have a "good fee-only tax advisor" that you use and would recommend?
Unfortunately no. But I can certainly see the benefit of consulting one to double-check your plan.

Re: Realistic Expectations for Long Bonds

It's both, right? When I first logged on here, Craig said that the long bonds were good for paying living expenses. (He must have a lot of bonds). I primarily thought about yield until, like you wrote above, interest rates changed. Sure -- bonds make money from both the interest payment and the cap...

Re: Realistic Expectations for Long Bonds

Not sure where to post this so I'll just resurrect this old thread... We used to discuss at what level of yield would people start selling off their long bonds. Are we there yet for any of you? As I write this, the yield has just dipped to 1.25% (!!!!). Any sellers? Thanks. If anything, the record ...

Re: Golden Butterfly rebalancing bands

So Tyler, with all that as background, if this were your situation, and given that you "prioritize keeping things generally balanced while being smart about tax management," what would you be doing with respect to re-balancing right now, given the above distributions and tax information? Also, from...

Re: When the cops are the criminals

The source of the article to be trusted? The article accurately quotes Flynn's own attorney and provides a direct link to the court filing to back it up. So yes. I'm more interested in what your doubt about the veracity of a well-known court case implies about the sources you do trust. If the truth...

Re: Golden Butterfly rebalancing bands

Personally I'm not a hard rebalancing band guy, as I prioritize keeping things generally balanced while being smart about tax management. But if you want to use PP-style bands, I think something between +/- 5% and 10% should work just fine.
