Re: PP vs Dividend Growth Investing

jalanlong , I wonder how many different firms your friend (relative) invests in, when he decides to cut and run, and why. He is an in-law so we have these discussions at family gatherings. According to him he never, ever sells. He is an owner in 3M, Mcdonalds, JNJ etc. and he will never sell. Of co...

Re: PP vs Dividend Growth Investing

The stock still needs to see appreciation to see a positive return at all ..a 4% dividend needs at least 4% appreciation to see a 4% return.. so a rising dividend in a down market only means the stock needs more appreciation to see that payout amount as a positive return ...that person is financial...

Re: PP vs Dividend Growth Investing

More power to this guy if he can keep a cool head through, say, 10 years of flat or negative returns. He claims to never look at the daily fluctuations or the market value of his portfolio at all. All he does is look at the dividend income he receives on his monthly statements . He says that year o...

Re: PP vs Dividend Growth Investing

For what it's worth, I am intellectually sympathetic to dividend investing. I think Graham's thinking that I mentioned above still has real validity to it. The behavioural benefits are also perfectly legit. That was what my in-law kept trying to impart to me. He claims that he has to do very little...

PP vs Dividend Growth Investing

At a family gathering last night I had the opportunity to discuss investing with a man who studies stocks as a hobby. He debated very intensely with me his view of the PP vs what he does which is just cash and safe, conservative dividend stocks. I would be interested in this forums' takes on his arg...

Re: Do T-Bills Keep Up with Inflation?

This discussion brings up my recent thoughts of just going all Treasury Bills or cash. My grandfather lived a sort of Dave Ramsey existence. He never borrowed money, never had credit cards and paid cash for all of his vehicles. The amount of interest he saved over his lifetime must have been stagger...

Re: Do T-Bills Keep Up with Inflation?

T-bills will keep up with inflation over the longer term, but it helps to shorten the maturity if the interest rate is starting to climb rapidly-- like right now. Also not helpful to get stuck at the front end of an inverted yield curve-- as in the last year. What is the longer term? I am pretty su...

PP vs Desert Portfolio

I have been in the PP for some time and been reading this board for quite a while. I became intrigued by the Desert Portfolio a while ago and the more I look and study it, the more it seems to beat the PP over most periods of time both in an absolute and a risk-adjusted level. The major difference i...

Any value in multiple ETFs?

I currently own a very basic 4x PP (TLT, IAU,VTI,SHV). Now that I am amassing a decent amount of money in each ETF, is it of any value to buy multiple ETFs for each asset to spread the risk of one ETF going under? For example instead of having all of my LT Treasury money in TLT I can split it betwee...

Black Swan ETF

Anyone every looked at this ETF? What is the difference (besides the expense ratio) between buying this and making my own Desert Portfolio using ETFs?

Re: is investing in stocks "immoral"?

Over 50% of NFL Revenue comes from television contracts. Ticket sales are a much smaller %. And since it costs nothing for people to sit at home and watch games on tv, they really aren’t feeling the hit of higher player salaries other than the incessant advertising that invades every part of the gam...
