Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

I thought this was a nice twitter thread on "Bitcoin as super-collateral": https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1225296658138722305.html vincent_c, have you read 'An (Institutional) Investor’s Take on Cryptoassets'? How do you see value accruing to smart contract platforms in the long term? In my chuc...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

I know this is a very pie in the sky thought, but that would be neat if there could be some distributed computing going on. In the early 00's, you could participate in SETI's project to search photographs of the stars, and it would happen when your computer was otherwise idle and ready to go to a s...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

So if bitcoins price is cut in half due to some market shakeout.. and with the continued halving events the amount of Bitcoin rewarded for work continues to decrease what happens if a large number of miners call it quits? Does the everything grind to a standstill? Will transactions take days to pro...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

No idea. Can't recall where I read it, but Nvidia announced some changes in their product range and specs e.g. cutting some of the performance if regular GCs are used for mining. So, do not know whether that will change also the product pricing model miners rely on. Too many unknowns for my taste. ...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

That begs the question...at what price does mining bitcoin become a losing proposition? What happens if miners can't turn a profit? It's already hardly profitable. Here, people are making some gains combining the BTC price increase with electricity thefts . Do not know how widely spread in US the e...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

Yep, the energy comes up often and it is massive. i mentioned in the lengthy Giveaway thread that a friend wanted to go in on mining and I just didn’t want to deal with the utility bill. That begs the question...at what price does mining bitcoin become a losing proposition? What happens if miners c...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

There is the other side that you probably can't see now since you probably have at least several BTC. Most people will feel like they missed out on HODLing a whole BTC and that has a psychological effect that deters from participating. If people start seeing another coin that seems to have potentia...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

Ethereum, well ether, is one that I am curious about. Kind of a next generation after bitcoin? I’m still reading up on the subject. Do you have any opinion on it? I would highly recommend reading "An (Institutional) Investor’s Take on Cryptoassets" to understand my and many other "bitcoin maximalis...

It seems like there are a few slivers of bitcoin around this forum still.

I am happy to consult via private message here or secure email to help you get your bitcoin into your own control, or even buy gold or amazon gift cards with them.

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

How are Bitcoins mined? I saw an article today about most of the Bitcoin mining is occurring China but I read it and it didn't compute. If a scarcity restraint is involved then obviously I don't understand it. Satoshi needed a way to translate physical world scarcity into the digital world. What he...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

Quick search on btc is not bitcoin went to a new coin: "Bitcoin sv" It is a fork of a fork of bitcoin. It is much cheaper below $200 still. Might be worth a gamble. Apply your normal thinking to other assets to the crypto space. Gold is expensive, but this sand.... Might be worth a gamble. Apple is...

I don’t know how they work. But I know how people work. And in this decade I think we’ll see celebrities hawking their own coins. Maybe Bitcoin will remain strong amidst the noise. But Marc de Mesel, bitcoin giveaway guy, is online saying “$BTC is not bitcoin.” I need to research what he means. You...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

I've been hearing a lot about competitors for Bitcoin springing up (I think I read about China starting a crypto currency), so that's enough to make me avoid it for now. At least with gold you know there is only one source for it - that which already exists or can be mined from the earth's scarce n...

Re: Bitcoin as a complement or alternative to gold in the PP

This is the best article I've seen on Bitcoin: https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/top-7-uses-for-bitcoin/ Crystal-clear about what it's useful for and what it's not. And NOT a gold substitute or equivalent in the PP, IMHO, though I can totally see its speculative appeal in a VP. Not a very insightfu...

Re: Bitcoin as a complement or alternative to gold in the PP

@bitcoininthevp What platform would you use for call and put purchases? How much are they selling for? You can use the CME. Ledgerx is another fully regulated options exchange in the US. Deribit is the biggest Bitcoin options exchange but not open to US retail customers due to regulation. Both thos...

Overall, this puts me 62.5% into gold - a highly defensive strategy.
Highly defensive towards (speculating) inflation and a currency crisis only.

Deflation or prosperity consummately crush this portfolio accordingly, right?

Or bitcoin eating golds lunch. :-X

Gold is truly anonymous. Bitcoin, not so much.
How does the IRS asking about it make it less anonymous? Completely irrelevant. If IRS asks about gold does that make gold all of the sudden less anonymous?

Re: Bitcoin as a complement or alternative to gold in the PP

I know it is tempting to feel one has to get in before it’s too late. But a lot of the too late scenarios would be problematic. I have some FOMO, but if it’s truly going to have a great future, it should be okay to wait. If you buy one bitcoin today, you can protect your USD value from a drop by bu...

Re: Bitcoin as a complement or alternative to gold in the PP

First I think the masses are just buying bitcoin through Robinhood. From what I can tell, you don't really have control of it there. I have never felt great about direct bitcoin holding. It feels very clunky. I don't see the masses ever adopting it in that form so it really isn't so moneyish yet. A...

Re: Bitcoin as a complement or alternative to gold in the PP

I'm thinking a 1% allocation to Bitcoin in the PP isn't such a crazy idea at this point. So that would be 24% in gold and 1% in Bitcoin. This number could be revisited as the market evolves. I had recommended a PP with a Bitcoin sidecar. Maybe its one way to look at it for PP purists. https://www.g...

I was just looking through all the Cryptos and found something called "bitcoin gold". I was feeling pretty good about getting a little bit but found out the two big exchanges don't even sell it. No wonder it looked like a better value to me. The masses can't buy it easily. I would really recommend ...

Wow. I don't know if that means you can also buy this from US account but will this be the first opening to be able to buy bitcoin in retirement accounts? Being able to buy bitcoin in a retirement account seems like a game changer more than the ETF itself. A lot more purchasing power in retirement ...

Isn't it pretty much a given that any cryptocurrency that becomes sufficiently popular is going to be targeted by the government? Governments don't like competition, especially in the monetary realm. Has any Bitcoin advocate sufficiently answered that question? I have always felt it was a matter of...
