Re: The Decline of Violence

Okay...  Well then your unassailable, self-evident rules for society must include a definition of "dementia" with which no one could possibly disagree, and which covers all the situations where a person mentally is incapable of exercising his rights and responsibilities. What unassailable, self-evi...

Re: How Bitcoin Really Works

It seems that there is no real scarcity of competing "bitcoin-like" digital currencies, so the long-term value of any of them will asymptotically approach zero.

Re: Estate Tax, US PP for Europeans on US or European exchanges?

I have no idea about estate taxes, but I'm pretty sure there are no US capital gains taxes for non-US persons.

Yes, the US is a tax haven... if you are not a resident or citizen of the US.

Re: Tax loss harvest GLD and buy half as much UGL?

Try this: http://stream.wsj.com/story/latest-headlines/SS-2-63399/SS-2-399957/ The article doesn't make a definitive claim about the wash sale rule's application to GLD. However, my opinion (not a tax attorney, etc.) is that there is very little risk that selling GLD and buying a different asset lik...

Re: Variable Annuity as part of PP

I have a Swiss franc fixed annuity as a significant part of my portfolio. It pays a minimum of least 2% annually, which didn't sound like much when I bought it but is pretty nice now!
I'm not planning to start drawing from it until I have to, at least in this interest rate environment.

Re: Figuring Out Religion

One item I would like to comment on relates to the idea that we hold the validation of the Jesus story to an unfairly high standard. Here's the thing, though: If you ask me to believe that God impregnated a virgin, that the resulting son Jesus was actually God in mortal form, that Jesus performed a...

Re: The Decline of Violence

My mother is an anthropologist who once studied a remote African village and witnessed a brutal marital rape sanctioned by the whole community....Can you possibly imagine something so horrible?  What's the answer? Are we right and they were wrong and were a backwards and primitive society for sanct...

Re: Ideal Overseas Gold Storage Option

I don't trust the banks as far as I can throw them. As well, I can see the US making gold ownership illegal again, their balance sheet is bad news, "We're coming..after...you!"  :o On a serious note, does anyone have a list or link to where I can research if other countries have done gold confiscat...
