Re: Mathjak! Do Safe Haven Investments Really Exist?

Don't mean to be putting you under the microscope Jak. Your specific complaint is a bit different than others who've come before you, but in the broader sense it's the same. There is always one (or more!) of the PP components that someone will find fault with both in history and in looking ahead. An...

Re: Mathjak! Do Safe Haven Investments Really Exist?

At some point, if you have enough money, I think it isn't so much a question of whether safe havens actually exist as do I even need them? If you are at a point where there was a major stock market crash followed by a long bear market, and you are pretty sure you will still have enough to meet your...

Re: Mathjak! Do Safe Haven Investments Really Exist?

Not to derail the thread, but I don't understand MJ's disappointment. When I run the numbers for the standard PP from January 2016 to March 2021 in Portfolio Visualizer, it has a CAGR of 7.79% with a max drawdown of 6.78% and a Sharpe ratio of 1.05. The PP seems to be working fine as far as I can t...

Re: How Baseball Cards Explain What Bitcoin Really Is

I disagree that money has to represent debt. It’s true for fiat money, but there has been money other than fiat. Silver and gold for instance.

I like the viewpoint that Bitcoin isn’t money because it has too much friction in transactions.

Just checked, KL is still at 38. Did you buy it, JC?

Re: Chauvin Verdict

Heard a joke the other day. What’s the difference between a libertarian and an anarcho-capitalist? Ten years. :) One big problem with libertarians is they all have strict purity tests. Put two together and you get a cat fight. Anything “left” involves authoritarianism. It always has and always will....

Actually unless you are in the zero capital gains tax bracket as little as a 2% dividend over the long term wipes out the lower capital gains rates and fund turnover makes it even worse in the taxable account Kitces found for most of us the best place for equities is the deferred accounts ...that s...

Another way of saying the Fed is in control, and we have to pick our poison. I doubt HB war gamed this scenario. But I still can't find comfort in anything substantially different.

Re: Golden Butterfly asset location when retired with RMDs

To the extent you can fine tune it, I would compare the yields of the stock funds with the bond funds. Put the higher yields into tax deferred or tax free. Don't feel bad about the location of the gold etf. I'm in the same boat. I can't complain about having unrealized gains. You will never complete...

US post office doing general surveillance of social media

This seems like it should be April fools. I’m simply flummoxed by this story. Do we not have enough surveillance agencies? The post office can’t even deliver parcels on time. https://news.yahoo.com/the-postal-service-is-running-a-running-a-covert-operations-program-that-monitors-americans-social-med...

If you mean sick right now, yes, the owners and a couple key people of the small business my son works for. The owner, his wife, the right hand man, and the wife of the sales guy. Those are the only ones I know at the moment, but I'm in an older age group so most of my contemporaries have been vacc...

Then there is the case of Amadou Diallo. Minding his own business, trying to get into his apartment building in the Bronx in the middle of the night. No weapon. Killed by crazy cops looking for a rape suspect. They fired 41 shots, hit him 19 times. Thought his wallet was a gun. Officers were acquitt...

Well that's a different matter altogether. You can't not convict or imprison a policeman, prosecutor, or judge just because of the prison dangers.

Re: Negative 1 and 3 Month Treasury Rates

The HBPP prescribes a Treasury money market fund for safety and liquidity, not yield. Chasing yield in cash is not necessary and can potentially lead to problems with safety and liquidity at the moment that you can least afford it. BTW, the nominal yield of a 1 year Treasury zero stands at -0.01% t...

Re: Chauvin Verdict

I don't have an opinion on the verdict itself, but I imagine there were pressures felt. I am sure the same dynamics were at work 60 years ago if a black man was charged with rape or something in Mississippi. Namely, the jurors would be afraid of the repercussions if they didn't vote the way the mob ...

I used the Wm Bernstein strategy: Higher income/ interest producing assets in tax deferred. Especially bonds. Lesser producing/ lower tax rate/ self-deferring assets in taxable Of course when we hit 70.5, the tax bills are going to come due. But supposedly all the years of deferral have made it wort...

Re: Golden Butterfly asset location when retired with RMDs

Are you just setting it up now, or do you already have the assets? The reason I ask is, if you already have the assets, I don't see how i can be worthwhile to move them around, given the tax consequences of the trades.
