Re: Will Trump be Re-elected?

You picked a good one in Generation Kill. The last few books I read related to Iraq/Afghanistan were: The Accidental Guerrilla by Kilcullen Wired For War by Singer Brave New War by John Robb My Jihad by Collins Dirty Wars by Scahill On The Hunt in Baghdad by Totten Ghost Wars by Coll America’s Secre...

Re: DIY individual stock fund

I still don't get the fixation on random, or "every 14th company in a list" method of choosing which companies to invest in. If you're planning on buying shares in a small bucket of companies to hold for the long term, I can't see randomness being a good criteria. Thinking of people who do invest in...

Re: Gold / Stock / Bonds at highs or near highs?

plus not only are gold and rates joined at the hip but we have equities at a high at the same time ... that makes for some wild moves in the pp which can be right on par with high equity portfolio volatility wise . yesterday we saw a .70% move in the pp with gold losing almost 2% and bonds losing 1...

Re: What if the unicorns die off?

If Uber and Lyft go out of business, what happens to my cheap, convenient rides? What happens to the drivers? Do they get de-platformed? Some other company could do the same thing they did. Maybe better. It's a pretty simple concept. Although I guess it depends. Maybe they went out of business beca...

Re: DIY individual stock fund

What's with the randomness? It looks like very few companies account for most of the SP500's return. Last year Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Netflix accounted for half of the SP500's return. I read an article recently (can't remember where) that said the same thing about this year's returns. I'd rath...

Re: Peloton

A French woman I know felt out of place when she lived in the Chicago suburbs because she got dressed up every day and no one seemed to notice. "In France, men look at you," she said. "It brings pleasure. Even women look at you. It's not always positive, but it's an acknowledgement that you exist. Y...

Re: Gold / Stock / Bonds at highs or near highs?

When I started the PP: VTI was at $75.04 30 year Treasuries were at 2.95% Gold spot was $1,730 1 year Treasuries were at 0.18% VTI was over $154 July this year. I think it was about at it's peak at the time I started the PP, around what it was in 2007 before it crashed. Bonds hit 2.09% in July 2016,...

Re: Omar accused of treasonous plot with Qatar

How is it that an apologist for a culture that claims the right to dismember a woman's genitalia against her will ends up in this position to begin with? Mutilating penii is part of the American culture, but lots of males are politicians. I'm not sure what argument this point advances, but surely y...

Re: Stock scream room

I guess different people handle it differently, right? You raise an interesting question. If the vp is “money you can afford to lose” (Harry’s words) do you replenish that once you lose it? But when you say “you would only add-non-investment income to the VP”, it’s still money that could have been ...

Re: Stock scream room

20% VP means you keep adding to it if it goes down. That's correct. If you're using HB's method, you don't keep a certain percentage of your wealth in the VP bucket. Otherwise, it's just another leg of the PP. You have to keep them separate, and only rebalance within each bucket. So you would only ...
