A town issuing its own local currency

The tiny town of Tenino, Washington is issuing its own currency. This certainly has implications on a lot of conversations we've had here in the past about what makes currencies work! The article seems to be really well done, going into detail on Tenino's plan, as well as a similar one from 100+ yea...

Re: GOP defending Confederate legacy?

Mostly the Native Americans were on the Confederate side. What does that do to your calculus? Also, blacks aren't necessarily a unified bloc on this either: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHqa2uFw2Vc Anybody have any confirmation on whether or not this is true? That the bill to rename military base...

Re: GOP defending Confederate legacy?

Glad you're enjoying the book!

The highlighted part says that slavery was the predominant "ignition point", but that's different from saying that's what the war was about. And the rest of the except goes on to say that the motivating impulse for the people fighting was nationhood, not slavery.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

Big V, If my math is correct, you’re approaching 60+ Switch from softball to golf and you’ll hit the ball further haha...but maybe not at first. Just returned from the driving range and they want 30 feet between players. That’s not even possible unless only one person is on the tee box or green at ...

Re: Is Trump doing a good job?

Hypocrisy everywhere. "Trump campaign asks supporters to sign coronavirus waiver ahead of rally" I'm also not sure where the hypocracy is here. But what's scary is the new precedent being set (not by this one event, but in general). It has never, ever been considered the default that you are guaran...

Re: All hail the new People's Republic of... CHAZ?

Another great evil he pioneered: 5. Primacy of the federal government over the state governments. America would have been so much better off if he never was president. Think about it. Probably no Spanish-American war, no World War I, no World War II (for anybody), no cold war, etc. Slavery in Ameri...

Re: GOP defending Confederate legacy?

Globally, wherever local people are attempting to throw off oppressive foreign governments, the Confederate flag has flown. It was at the fall of the Berlin Wall, for example. But also to this day Neo-Nazi's in Germany use the Confederate flags because it most closely represents the ideology repres...

Re: GOP defending Confederate legacy?

The North, to the degree we can collectivize the government and people into a blob and give them collective interests, didn't care much about slavery. But the South sure did... https://www.battlefields.org/learn/primary-sources/declaration-causes-seceding-states Nary a mention of taxes or tariffs.....

Re: GOP defending Confederate legacy?

I agree, the whole "state government" thing was just a convenient better sounding BS argument that they could use to rationalize the true reason they went to war. They wanted states to have power because their state would allow them to continue to pursue their selfish dehumanizing actions. American...

Re: GOP defending Confederate legacy?

I haven't been keeping on top of the news lately, so I'm not sure what fresh outrage triggered talking about Confederates again, but I'm going to drop a half-cocked opinion on you anyways because THIS. IS. INTERNET! How ironic that the Republican party of Lincoln is currently so adamant about defen...

Re: All hail the new People's Republic of... CHAZ?

I've heard some people saying Trump doesn't have the legal authority to send in the military. Say What? Then how is it that the Confederate States of America isn't still a country? Several states deciding to leave the Union is so different from rioting in the streets that there is no comparison. Ra...

Re: Another angle on the recent events in America and the world

So far, I don't know that a single other soul has looked at the John McWhorter interviews I've posted. It may be because there are more than a dozen threads on the riots now and I haven't kept up with all of them. Or, it may simply be that the videos are too damned long! How about just a few minute...
