Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

I've read (somewhere) that the drop in food production will primarily affect exports to third-world countries, where the lack of available food could by itself kill as many as the virus.

Re: Treasurey to sell $3 Trillion in Bonds by July

From a PP perspective nothing changes. You hold your 4 assets. You rebalance. Over time you win. Simple as that. All the wailing and gnashing of teeth about bonds and cash does nothing. Every asset is going to go down someday. From a PP perspective, those days are the days to buy, not the days to s...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

The goal wasn't a "flat" curve, it was a "flatter" curve. One that keeps the number of cases below the medical capacity. Note how the total number of cases (the area under the curve) is the same, or perhaps even higher in the "flatter" scenario. So if you don't bump up against 100% capacity, you are...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

If the hospitals are not at 100% capacity, then all forms of lockdowns must end. The goal of the lockdown was to make sure that people didn't die as a result of insufficient medical capacity. Full stop. The goal was never to prevent everyone from getting the virus. In your opinion. Thankfully, your...

Re: Would you wear a mask?

The thing is that Fauci and scientists are myopic. This doesn't mean they're doing their jobs wrong. They should recommend the best thing for public health. But no one thing is the most important thing in the world. That viewpoint has to be balanced against everything else. Just as a for instance, w...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

FWIW, there is a large petition going around here with thousands of local business signatures asking the governor to change his mind and keep the lockdown in place until the data shows an actual decline in cases. The problem is that our cases and deaths per week have both been continuously increasi...

Re: Would you wear a mask?

Used to teach English, and getting by on investments these days. Again, I’m not trying to use my own choice as something to impose on everyone else. I just wish people would honor the lockdown while it lasts, like wearing a mask if the state calls for it. As opposed to I’m an anarchist, and I don’t...

Re: Would you wear a mask?

If I am a healthy person with no known risk factors, what is the ultimate purpose of staying locked up in my house and avoiding as much human contact as possible? The short answer is that you may be asymptomatic, appearing to be healthy, and spreading the disease to enough people that you will quit...

Re: Would you wear a mask?

Harris County has had under 8,000 cases, out of a population of 4.7 million. The actual odds of one of your maskless coworkers having the disease would seem to be vanishingly small.

Isn't the cap gains rate something like 23%, since 2012? That's why Lucas sold Star Wars that year, before the change took effect. Saved him a bundle on his $4bil in capital gains!

Re: YouTube Junkie

How Beat Detective and Autotune killed music Fascinating stuff. I knew they abused Autotune, but I didn't know they just edited songs like that. I thought the musicians just played it over and over again until they got it ;D I remember playing around with Fruity Loops at my friends house, it looked...
