The trick is to make the background transparent rather than any particular color.

Tech, would you make this your avatar?

Re: Trump's Phone Calls w/ Foreign Leaders

Tech, is there anything Trump could do or not do in the next four months that could get you to not vote for him? Not saying you’d vote for Biden, but just sit out? I'm obviously not Tech, but to answer your question, I would not vote for Trump if I found out that he had died. ;) (Sorry, just trying...

Re: Bond FAQ

The Permanent Portfolio holds 25% of its allocation in long term US Treasury bonds. There is an extensive FAQ on the subject here: https://web.archive.org/web/20160324133409/http://crawlingroad.com/blog/2009/02/09/permanent-portfolio-25-bond-allocation-faq/ Are these FAQs up somewhere? The link is ...

Clippers with no attachment for me. Leaves about 1/8" of hair. Damn easy to take care of, and I don't care about hair. Never did. If I could take a pill to have all the hair fall off my body and never shave again, I would. Except for eyebrows. That would look weird.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us

I'm sure it was hugely expensive then. I looked into it once: you can get a whole pile of Costco-branded (Kirkland) Rogaine-equivalent for hardly anything.

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

The great link that flyingpylon posted in the other thread points out that in Texas, any patient who is hospitalized for whatever reason and happens to test positive for coronavirus (and it isn't even clear whether that means antibodies or an active infection) is counted as a "coronavirus hospitali...

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

Something like Condorcet voting would help:

But it still wouldn't lead to the kind of multiparty coalitions you see in Europe.

Re: An outsiders perspective of the politcal turmoil

I think fundamentally a big issue is "first past the post" voting. The Constitution doesn't recognize political parties, and that's very nice in theory... But they sprang up anyway, and with winner-take-all 51% voting everywhere, it's inevitably going to turn into exactly two parties at each other's...

Re: Is Trump doing a good job?

I might one day see a poster saying "Strike out cancer!" with a picture of a pitcher throwing a ball. Baseball is America's pastime... I'm American... Now I'm offended because the poster is bigoted against Americans!

Re: Is Trump doing a good job?

The "euphemism treadmill" is a different debate. Seriously, look it up, it's fascinating. "idiot", "imbecile", and "moron" were all created as value-free clinical terms for people of low IQ. Then those got charged with meaning and were replaced by "retarded". Then "special". Same thing over and over...
