Re: Vinyl

I collect vinyl in a specific non-music niche simply because the vast majority of it has not been (and will never be, at least not commercially) transferred to digital. I'm doing my own transfers for convenience.  It's amazing to consider how much recorded material is going to be completely lost as ...

Re: Printing money does not lead to inflation, argues Argentine central bank preside

In the health care setting, there is the bizarre countercurrent of health care providers constantly complaining about low reimbursement rates for medical services, while overall the cost of care continues to increase dramatically.  You would think that if reimbursement rates were that low, and a si...

Re: Printing money does not lead to inflation, argues Argentine central bank preside

It's not that the private sector has all of the answers, it's the voluntary nature of private exchange relationships that make them appealing to me.  I like the idea of a service or product provider competing for my business rather than telling me that I can do business with them or be locked up. T...

Re: New Permanent Portfolio Book Available for Pre-Order

Is there any advantage to pre-ordering the book?

Sounds like it's finished... does it really take 6-7 months to print?

Looking forward to it either way.  I've been Kindle-only for a while but might actually like to have a paper copy of this one (or both, right? ;) )

Re: Peter Schiff on Treasury collapse

I'm still in the very steep part of the learning curve on all of this stuff, so perhaps this is a dumb question but: If the US continues to increase its debt and simply increases the money supply to cover it, that makes each dollar worth less, correct? So what creditor is happy about having a loan r...

Re: Lottery is now $476 Million

The bottom line is that you can't win if you don't play. I've thought about the possibility of purchasing all 176 million combinations, but in addition to the possibility of other people winning, there is the practical matter of purchasing 176 million tickets.  Seems like I read somewhere that "they...

Re: Low Carb Diet

Lots of great links in this thread... they are all sources I have been following over the last few years.  I have been on a moderately-low-carb diet since about 2009 and have seen a number of benefits (though weight loss in particular was not a primary concern for me). Interestingly enough, in a rou...

Re: value of a CUSIP number in GoogleDocs?

Just for future reference, in case Fidelity changes the page again and it breaks your spreadsheet formula, here is what the formula does: =index(ImportHtml("http://fixedincome.fidelity.com/fi/FIBondAnalytics?cusip="&"CUSIP",1,10),5,2) The ImportHtml function gets the page at that url and looks in th...

Re: value of a CUSIP number in GoogleDocs?

Yes, you followed my incorrect instructions!  :)  Sorry about that.  I have fixed it.

The problem was that you did not have quotation marks around the CUSIP number.

Re: value of a CUSIP number in GoogleDocs?

It looks like Fidelity has changed the page that displays bond prices. I updated the cell in my Google Spreadsheet that displays the price to this: =index(ImportHtml("http://fixedincome.fidelity.com/fi/FIBondAnalytics?cusip="&"CUSIP",1,10),5,2) You'll need to replace CUSIP with the actual CUSIP numb...

Re: Education in the Information Age

The single biggest advantage of college is the networking.  This is most valuable and prized at the Ivy League schools where alumni and cronyism lasts for life, hence the huge cost premium, otherwise it is far more cost-effective and time-effective to get an online distance degree. Aside from "chec...
