Re: Update on Chromebook

Coffee, Can you elaborate on why you wouldn't think of it as a Windows replacement?  I've read the arguments for and against...I'm just wondering what you've thought (beyond the hardware issues.)  I work across platforms and locations, so I've pretty much moved all of my work to the Chrome browser a...

Re: Buying real estate....pay cash or get a mortgage?

For me, the discovery of the PP made a big difference in this debate.  While having the mortgage paid off would be great, it seems there are some significant considerations for the PP (if one has to choose): 1.  Liquidity is the best security in a crisis.  2.  With the Feds applying financial repres...

Re: Is the successful salaried retail investor a myth?

PS, Great post.  No doubt, your math adds up for the vast majority.  I wanted to add Bill Bernstein's book to this argument: http://www.amazon.com/The-Ages-Investor-Life-cycle-Investing/dp/1478227133/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1373895055&sr=8-2&keywords=william+bernstein I think Bernstein is...

Jake,

Check out Bill Bernstein's analysis:

Also,  MG has put up a lot of interesting FI articles, especially regarding low volatility.

Re: Insurance

One thing to add, in the PP spirit, counter party risk ca be a significant issue with insurance.  I chose to use mass mutuals, since they are investor owned like Vanguard.  For an insurance policy where there is the issue of interpretation, ie. disability, I think this is particularly worth consider...

Against the Gods is amazing.

Also, would add Work Less, Live More by Robert Clyatt.  Sort of a thinking person's version of Your Money or Your Life.

Re: Tax Avoidance with Vanguard Variable Annuities

Can one of the better informed here detail the sequence that would lead to considering Vanguard VAs?

Here is my thinking, in terms of maximizing tax avoidance:
Roth 401K
Non-deductible IRA
SEP (if side job, self employed)
....I hadn't thought of a VA.

"I think a lot of people on this forum share your distaste for carrying debt.  There's an argument to be made for refinancing into a rock-bottom interest rate and then saving with the idea that your investment returns will be at least as good as the mortgage rate.  Then the money is there if yo...

Retirement account options

I have a Roth 401k with my current job.  I do a bit of consulting work on the side.  If I wanted to invest in a second retirement savings vehicle, I am wondering if there is anything beyond the traditional IRA?  Could I put the money in a SEP for the consult income?  In particular, I am trying to fi...

Generating "alpha" in life

When I first became aware of the PP, what impressed me the most was HB's rule of investing in career rather than the market.  This resonated very much with my own experience.  In a broader sense, I thought it was helfpul to think about my entire life as an investment.  So, I thought it might be inte...

Re: Selling stocks

Thanks for the replies.  To clarify, my grandfather is alive, so it was not an inheritance.  I guess it would just be a gift, since he just transfered the stock to my brokerage account.  I am assuming there is not a gift tax since it is below the IRS minimum (11k or whatever it is now.)  The stocks ...

Selling stocks

I'm hoping someone can help with a basic stock question.  My grandfather gifted me a small amount (<10k) of stock for my daughter.  I've never owned stock before outside of mutual funds or ETFs.  I'd like to sell the individual shares to put them in an ETF as part of a PP set up.  He has sent me the...

Skating Where The Puck Was

William Bernstein's new book discusses the problem with alternative asset classes:  as they become better known and more liquid, the returns go down and the correlations go up.  He discusses the PP in this regard as well:

Margin

On a previous post, Craig and others warned about one's broker loaning out shares if margin was available on the account...something like that.  Is this possible with ETFs as well?  I have a straight 4 ETF PP with no stocks.  My broker (TD Ameritrade) said it was not possible with ETFs because they ...

Influenza pandemic.  If you want to scare yourself, look into ventilator
resources in such a scenario.  A pandemic of 1918 virulence translates to
50 to 80 million deaths.
