Re: Filipiuk's Canadian Permanent Portfolio and my fear of bonds.

Costs are important;
MNT = 35 basis points
IGT = 25 basis points (my choice)

Re: PP investors--stay the course

Outside of the first few days, my PP has been down every single day since I started it earlier this year. I am currently down 3%. What a like about the PP is that it is basically a defense first investing strategy. Protecting you against catastrophic loss during any economic cycle, in effect saving...

Re: Canadian PP down 7.26% this year

Shadow - I don't understand why holding the Canadian stock market is a bad choice. I guess because you are not taking advantage of when the stock markets of the world beat Canada's? How often do the stock markets of the world beat Canada's? My return for XIC since Dec '11 (when I started) is 7.3% a...

Re: Canadian PP down 7.26% this year

I still don't understand why I'd want to buy into say, consumer staples of other countries, since they don't represent MY country's prosperity...but whatever,  the backtesting shows that having american stocks lowers volatility, so I bought american stocks anyway. Hi Christina, I'm also a Cdn PPer,...

Re: Permanent Portfolio for Canadians

FWIW, I'm 12.5% XIC       12.5% XWD       25% IGT       25% ZFL       12.5% HISA       12.5% CFL I've split my equity portion and cash portion for more diversification, simple. I will rebalance in the New Year and will look to add some REIT exposure through ZRE as I don't get this part of the Cdn ma...

Re: I'm Done!

Human emotion is the greatest obstacle to success. It’s easier to scare the crap out of people than inform them. In fact, fear is the greatest single motivator. Not lust, hunger or greed. We’re most driven to take action when we’re scared. ;)

Re: Canadian PP?

Hi NewPPer, Thanks for sharing your PP construction, my only criticism of your holdings is the equity portion allocation. Cost and diversification. IMO opinion you can slash your costs in half with a XIC/XWD split and gain exposure to thousands of stocks in multiple countries across multiple sectors...

Re: pp or solid bond fund for education savings plan for kids

Hi Christina, for simplicity you could look at ING's Streetwise Balanced Funds at http://www.ingdirect.ca/pdfs/en/EN_FFS_Balanced_Nov_2011.pdf cheap and it's an index fund capturing market returns and allowing you some growth above inflation rather than their HISA. Mer of 1.07% seems pretty reasonab...

Re: Canadian PP?

Hi CA PP,

No problem, I do eventually plan on converting all my ZFL to the long bond as you suggest :) Thanks

Re: Canadian PP?

Hi Guys, Here's my breakdown Cash 25% -  combination of CLF and a HISA for my cash component  IGT - 25% XIC - 12.5% XWD -12.5% ZFL - 25% I love the idea of using short and long term bonds, as suggested by CA PP to me earlier, just haven't had the stones to implement yet. Maybe next year. For now I a...

Re: Have you told anyone about the Permanent Portfolio?

I am very happy I found the PP. Before I found the PP, investing was mostly a confusing and frustrating experience that seemed to involve a lot of risk, speculation and murky cause and effect relatinships. Now, I really enjoy investing.  This has also been my experience. I talked to Mrs. Shadow abo...

Re: Some Questions about the Permanent Portfolio from a Newbie

Shadow, For the cash component of the CA PP, I like the idea of 1-3 yrs bond / 6rugs ladder. Since dividend is paid twice a year, it makes good sense to me that every time there is a bond payment (from cash component bonds and long term bond 2045), a rug matures, then I shovel every thing up to the...

Re: Some Questions about the Permanent Portfolio from a Newbie

Shadow, It is so easy to purchase individual bonds that you could consider to ditch ZFL (and it s fees) and buy directly the CAN 01.12.2045. On top of that, duration will be higher. I would also suggest to do the same with cash: 3 years ladder (6 rugs/6months JUN&DEC). Ciao. Hi CA PP, I will de...

Re: Some Questions about the Permanent Portfolio from a Newbie

Hi, I have just finished converting 1/3 portfolios to the HB PP after reading Craig's article in the Canadian Moneysense Magazine. I love it's simplicity and safety. I had to make 16 sells yesterday and 4 Buys to achieve this so my heartrate was right up there for awhile. I will probably wait until ...

Re: Canadian pp suggestion?

Hi Metta, I'm also a Canadian trying to implement the PP for myself. Waiting for delivery of Harry's Book so i can read more into his strategy. In the meantime I've converted 50% of my PP into a HISA and 25% into ZFL as suggested. I guess i like that approach for it's diversity into 10 LTBs as oppos...
