How do you separate VP from PP
Do you use a different brokerage or different ETFs for vp? Can you give me some tips how to separate them? Thanks!

Re: Canadian PP down -5.29% since October 2012
I agree it's not a bad idea to have some VTI. VTI saved me. I can hear your pain. I spent a lot of time thinking about Canadian pp but so far it has been pretty stressful and not so rewarding. Big part of it is that I am not patient enough and terrified and not fully convinced of pp in this economic...

Re: Do I not need to sell outperforming assets if I add money to pp
In hindsight, i wish I had sold stocks before the current Canadian market crash. Most of my investment is in registered accounts so I'm not worried about taxes. And isn't it hard to buy gold now when it is free fall although I probably hit rebalancing band. Also, when do we check the portfolio and d...

Do I not need to sell outperforming assets if I add money to pp
I'm planning to keep adding money to pp. Will I not have to sell outperforming assets if I can rebalance by buying the worst performing asset? Would that decrease return as I never sell. I'm tempted to sell some stocks to capture gain. Thanks!

Canadian pp: LTT or TLT?
Hi, I need to buy long term bonds in my RRSP. Is there a way to keep track of Canadian Long term bonds prices in graphs? With ETFS, such as ZFL or TLT, we can easily view price changes in graphs. For convenience, would you buy TLT over LTT especially when CAD is at par. Any issues buying TLT in regi...

Re: GTU Discount
Sorry for such a basic question. According to the http://www.gold-trust.com/asset_value.htm, the discount to NAV is 0.4% as of yesterday. Does NAV stay the same or change daily? How do I calculate how much discount it is if I buy it today? Thanks so much in advance.

Can I seek some advice from the experienced? I'm stressed out and I'm not sure how to be a worry free ppier. I really wish I didn't have to check the market everyday and got stressed out because I don't really have time and energy for this. But the reason why I keep checking is that I still have mor...

Re: I'm Done!
As gold is the most volatile of the 4 assets, the negative real return risk can only be mitigated by using market timing or normalizing the risk of the portfolio assets. I believe the [economic] situation is especially perilous at the moment with stocks still overvalued, bond yields near historical...

I thought we are not supposed to count on dividends. In fact, HB was against using dividend stocks, which I still quite don't get.

CAD PP when gold is tanking
Hi, I'm sorry I seem to keep repeating myself and doubting about a CA PP. Is a Canadian pp still working? When gold is tanking, one of the 4 assets are supposed to shoot up to reduce the loss, but not the case this week- stocks tanked, CAD is down, LTT is up but not enough. How to make of this? Is g...

Re: Starting a pp - sell everything before starting?
Gusso, are you still not tempted to buy CDZ or REITs ETF? I do feel so strongly I need to construct a variable pp consisting CDZ and REITs. XIC has been so terrible. I feel that I would be more diversified holding these along with XIC as it seems to lower volatility while giving me higher return.

Re: 2012 performance
My Canadian pp (with some US asset) is down more than 3% since I started in two months ago. I expected some downside risk but not this much in a short period time. :( I guess it was a good thing I put in only half of my money but it is pretty discouraging and I wonder if I should invest the rest in...

Re: Monthly Additions to HBPP
I just finished putting half of my cash into a pp. Now I still have the other half. I'm thinking of doing DCA over 10 mo investing 10K a month but I can see that once a month, I would probably have to buy all three assets as one asset is unlikely to fall this much. That leads to at least 3 x 10 doll...

Re: Using the Permanent Portfolio to raise money to buy property
Studies show that renting is actually cheaper than owning in Vancouver. I wouldn't consider buying into this market and would move to somewhere else if I decide to buy. What did Harry Brown say about owning the primary residence? Is it more of a budget issue if own's one home is consumption, not inv...

Re: Using the Permanent Portfolio to raise money to buy property
metta, How have rents kept up with housing prices around there? I think what can help facilitate a housing price drop is other options becoming apparent. If housing in general, rents included, goes parabolic for a period, it's probably a lot harder for a home price adjustment to take place. I coul...

renter looking into REITS?
I'm a renter as we can't afford these ridiculous prices in Vancouver, Canada. What do you think of investing in REITS in a vpp to get some exposure to real estate? REITS are hard to resist in tax free account with high dividend yields and relatively solid performance in the last several years compar...

Re: Using the Permanent Portfolio to raise money to buy property
I haven't yet bought our first home yet and want to buy one in 5 years because children are growing and needing more room. We are hoping a drastic drop in housing prices in Vancouver. Who knows when that will happen so I decided to invest all my saving (about 200K) into a pp. So far I have invested ...

I bought some TLT yesterday as CAD is above par and TLT was down recently. I think it does not hurt to have some TLT for Canadians when CAD is strong for rebalancing purpose. TLT is more liquid than ZFL and more convenient to buy and sell 40yr Canadian LTT (I think the minimum purchase and sell amou...

Re: Starting a pp - sell everything before starting?
If dividends are counted, dividend stock ETFs oftern perform better in prosperity, not only there is dividend tax credit. And in bad times, they don't go down as much. So why is it bad? I have a hard time understanding it. I wouldn't use prefered shares ETF for a stock portion in pp as it is really ...

Starting a pp - sell everything before starting?
Hi, I'm trying to start a pp. I have about 10% invested in stocks. The stocks I bought last summer somewhat recovered although they are still in red, but with dividends, I'm almost even. Is it better to sell them slight loss and start a pp by buying each asset 25% each at once or DCA over 10months a...

Re: Canadian PP?
Would you not think CLF (1-5 yr laddered gov't bonds) as too volatile for cash? It is certainly very liquid though. Because we don't have a 1-3yr gov't bonds ETF, I'm tempted to use it for cash. It is also free at itrade. What do you think would be good options for TFSA? REITs seems to be best in TF...

Hi Craig,
When do you expect your book to be published? I would rather wait for your book before I take the plunge into a full pp.
