Re: Help Finding Least Bad 401k option

The rest of the plans options consist of plenty of good equity index funds, and a few target date funds. What my best options here? Right now I'm debating between the following options. 1. Keep the 50/50 equities/total bond fund portfolio with the non-treasuries since the credit quality is listed a...

Re: Warren Buffett Interview

Another great Buffett interview from back in the day that's on the more difficult side to find now. Thanks Smithy, that was interesting. On the theme of old interviews, here are the typewritten notes from a Ben Graham lecture back in 1963 https://jasonzweig.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/BG-speech-...

Re: Are you always taking a bath on at least one asset?

<snip> I thoroughly believe that the typical investor, particularly ones of the boglehead variety, drastically underestimates: 1. Their overall risk of ruin 2. Their own risk tolerance when facing massive loses and where the bottom is unknown 3. How much "timing", e.g. the unexpected loss...

Re: Are you always taking a bath on at least one asset?

I think both gold and Bitсoin are assets that should be kept in reserve with a wait-and-see policy regarding their deployment. In other words, during a true currency crisis, one should wait until the economic and political situation stabilizes before deploying these hard assets. This is in contrast...

Re: Are you always taking a bath on at least one asset?

I guess more generally, how do folks here psychology insulate themselves from the tracking error inherent in these types of portfolios? Interestingly enough, I find it easier with just two items (Gold & VDCO). All the rebalancing between Bonds & Shares is not seen, and my mindset is that Go...

Re: New Here - What are folks investing in

I'm curious. Are most people here invested in a traditional PP, a GB, or something else entirely? Good Morning Burley, Depends on the funds available where you live, and the tax sheltered retirement account rules. For us in Australia, we just do 25% Gold, 75% Vanguard VDCO. The Early Retirement Ext...

Somewhat similar alternative? The All-Weather portfolio integrates a fuller spectrum of defences – including assets with a better record against the withering winds of inflation. (Hmm, smooth metaphor mixology – Ed). Not really All-Weather. Ray Dalio now says he doesn't want to hold debt and cash i...

Re: PP vs 60/40 Shares/Gold

This video has been blowing my mind today (among other current events). My takeaways: [*] With a 5 year horizon, 20% stocks / 80% gold is safer than 40% stocks / 60% tbills. [*] At a 10 year horizon, 40 % stocks / 60% gold has the same average returns as 50% stocks / 50% tbills, but had much better...

Sounds very similar to BelangP's approach, with your cash allocation being 25%.

All the best for your investing success!

I can't believe I was vaguely aware of this song (as in I recognize the tune) yet I've never associated it with Australia or any political themes. "Give it back" is a quite creepy line. And it seems somewhat grotesque to me that such a song is sung by a guy who looks like elderly Reinhard...

Re: What's the actual rationale for investing in long term bonds?

I think I should read Mr Grahams book. Based on the passages quoted, a 50% stock, 50% cash and gold portfolio seems perfectly reasonable and also in line with your formula of "1/2 savings, 1/2 investments" (However, unlike you, he seems to place bonds more in the "savings" compo...

Re: What am I missing here?

OK, so according to Harry Browne, Shares out perform during prosperity. Running the Portfolio Visualiser again with Long Term Bonds, it can be seen that the Total Share Market far outperformed the LT Bonds. So for the the USA forum members (or anyone else who wants to comment), did the past 15 years...
