Re: A reminder to run through your personal safety plans

I wear my side arm at home about 40% of the time.  I also have loaded handguns in strategically placed hidden locations throughout the house and garage.  Therefore I am never more than 10 feet from a loaded weapon when inside.  My wife and I always carry when outside the house.  I have conditioned m...

I like the old fashioned waxed cotton ducked chaps.  They don't hold water when wet and never get heavy.

Re: How Old Are You And What Is Your Goal Using The PP?

61 years old and retired for 2 years.  PP is supplying us with a 4% withdrawal rate without going into principle.  This along with our pension allows my wife and I to live extremely well and comfortably.  Thanks to all on this board and the earlier Bogleheads PP thread who educated me on the benefit...

Re: Physical gold or ETF for my IRA?

greetings ozzy and welcome.  I think you'll find that most of us hold physical gold and also gold ETF's.  The main reason for holding some in an ETF is that it makes it easy to rebalance your gold holdings.

60 and retired 2 years.  Using the PP to supplement my pension (which accounts for 63% of our monthly expenses).  So far we have not had to go into our PP principal.

Re: Generator Advice?

I suggest that you don't need an 8000W generator.  In a pinch you don't need everything operating at one time during an outage. I run my essentials:  freezer, sump pump, furnace, washer or dyer (not similtaneously), and half the house lighting circuits. I have wired all these essential circuits to o...

I also use AJPM.  Go to their website and watch for their web specials.  I've done well with the specials and paid as little as 1% premium over spot.

Re: Dietz Oil Burning Lanterns

I own three.  I hang one outside near the driveway on a pole at night when company is coming over.  We live on a semi-rural dark road.  It helps our guests find the house easier.  We also use one in our truck camper to take the chill off before we retire at night.  Also have two hurricane oil lamps ...

Re: How Many Here Use Facebook?

I have no use for it.  It's all about more privacy for me.  The less people know about me and my personal business  the better I like it.  Why some people need to let everyone know there up to the minute plans, I have no idea! My father always said: "the more people you know, the more problems ...

I own Eagles, $20 gold Liberties and Saints (non-numismatic), Leafs, Sovereigns and swiss francs.  One Ultra Eagle and also several fractional eagles and leafs.  Also Silver eagles and leafs.  I live in the US on the Canadian border and hence the reason for many leafs.

No.  I wait patiently for their web specials to appear that are aligned with my bullion needs and then I pounce.
I also have acquired a good working relationship with the man who operates one of their stores.

Re: Opening A Candian Bank Account as US Citizen? Possible?

I investigated the Canadian banks near me earlier this year.  My choice would be CIBC if it were me.  Check it out here:    https://www.cibc.com/ca/chequing-savings/index.html I think border town or interior banks make no difference.  I wouldn't travel any further than you have to. Years ago, I know...

Re: Opening A Candian Bank Account as US Citizen? Possible?

I live on the Canadian border in the NE.  A 10 minute drive and I can be in Canada.  Canadian banks will open accounts for US citizens.  I have often had the same thought as you.  Instead, I have decided to further diversify by holding Canadian bullion coins as part of my PP gold assets.  I have vis...

Re: Gold is the New Long Term Treasury?

I've recognized this trend also.  Perhaps someday down the "kicking can road" our ancestors will be:  25% cash, 25% stock and 50% gold.  Maybe when the dollar looses it's reserve status and treasuries flounder for extended decades.

I live on the Canadian border.  I know I can legally take $10,000 across.  Perhaps I'll just take some of my emergency money and deposit it in a Canadian bank.

Re: Holding some foreign currencies?

Just my prediction but:  The nations spending habit is not sustainable.  Our politicians did not indicate today, by passing legislation on the debt ceiling and spending cuts, that they are about to or will ever do anything to get this nation back on a sound financial course.  The US bond rating will...

Holding some foreign currencies?

I'm thinking of taking a portion of my cash holdings (perhaps 3-5%) and converting them to a few foreign currency CD's with EverBank.  Mostly because I believe the dollar will continue to tank.  The CD pays 1.2% for six months and hopefully will gain on the exchange rates down the line.  What say ye...

Before Craigr's forum I would go to the bogleheads site just to find the PP thread.  I would occassionally veiw other threads there but gained 99% of knowledge from the folks at the PP thread.  That is my interest. I was delighted when I discovered that Craigr was creating this site.  The members he...
