Re: Quality Time Left

Fidelity has autoroll if you're already with them. Maybe other brokerages as well.

Re: Inflation Reduction Act

Tax increases remove the supply of money from the economy, so that would tend to reduce inflation. It doesn’t strike me as a good way to go about it. We could also just inflate away our debt and avoid raising taxes.... Now you sound like a republican. Nah to be a proper R, I'd say that inflating aw...

That's true.
IIRC, wasn't there a slight deflation scare with the Clinton budget surpluses? Good to know that we took care of that problem right fast!

Hahahah! That's epic. Good stuff!

I think my innate cynicism is what keeps me becoming a full utopian progressive even though I lean left.

Re: Figuring Out Religion

If there is a metaphysical reality beyond the here and now, then yes it would apply to all people. However I also believe it's unimportant (except for the religions that make a big deal out of it). It's like the literal inerrancy of the Bible. The book is self contradictory without mental gymnastics...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

I'd say that Prothero would say the question itself is an example of a Christian conception of religion. Christianity is uniquely focused on sin and salvation to be mediated via belief in correct doctrine. His argument is that other religions are not nearly as focused on orthodoxy and explore other ...

Re: Renewable electricity sources are now a no-brainer

I think the vendors are used to handwaving in front of semi-innumerate homeowners that just go "okay, whatever lowers my monthly bills." Thanks. I like to immerse myself in all the details so there are no surprises or regrets after I finally make the decision. I've seen too many people quickly make...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

Just finished Stephen Prothero’s God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run the World As can be gathered from the title, he does not believe that all religions are ultimately the same. Instead, he posits that Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Confucianism, Yoruba Religion, and Daoism e...

Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?

I think ultimately it really is about matching the portfolio to your personality, not so much the conditions of the world around it. Hear hear! My wife has an iron stomach when it comes to missed gains. She totally DGAF about losing out on a rising market gain. She'd happy take the first half of th...

Re: Inflation Reduction Act

Funny. I come from the exact opposite direction. I was a dittohead growing up, and while I have some lingering sympathises for the silicon valley libertarianism of my youth, I absolutely despise the current incarnation of the GOP with its authoritarian tendencies.

Re: Inflation Reduction Act

Yet you all have no willingness to even consider the other point of view. The way I see it, it's the left that is reactionary (climate change), angry (abortion) and prone to consuming propaganda (CNN, MSNBC). I'm curious. Who on the left do you follow? On my end, my main follow is the Dispatch Crew...

Re: Inflation Reduction Act

The urge to be known as a victim is very strong in the U.S. right now. I've never seen it this bad. Yeah, everyone wants to be the lone man standing athwart history yelling stop. Whether its against racism (or against anti-racism) or COVID fascism (or protect the kids) or to protect Jesus (or save ...

Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?

I've been thinking about collapse lately. There are a lot of China Bulls and China Bears out there. My guess is that the most likely scenario is malaise - like the Japanese run from the 1990's-2010's. It's not a sexy scenario (versus collapse&desolation or kowtowing to our new yellow overlords). As ...

Re: Are most people here sticking with Treasuries?

In my mind, the 100% stock investor is putting all their money on the table w/ AA pre-flop. On average, they will end up ahead. However, some outcomes will be close to ruinous, e.g. Germany or Japan 1939-1948. How well did bonds, cash, or gold do during those times? Your Money or Your Life includes...

Re: Why did Pelosi cross the road?

She was trying to incite a gathering during a pandemic, which was apparently against the law in her jurisdiction at that time. Not sure what bill of rights the Australians got, but it seems that whatever they got doesn't cover this. Just an another overbearing democratic nanny-state that one may or...

Re: Renewable electricity sources are now a no-brainer

Oh, I misread the thread and thought the metal roof idea was coming from the either the roofing or solar manufacturers. If both of them are OK with it, then I think your theory makes sense. The tech will most likely hit the end of their useful service life before the anticipated life of the shingles...

Re: Renewable electricity sources are now a no-brainer

In any event would you not agree that with me being 71 years old I should be set for life with him installing 35, 40 year asphalt shingles? If so, why go to the added expense of metal roofing which will last even longer than I am alive? That could well be the option for someone your age. But it doe...

Re: Why did Pelosi cross the road?

None of this is happening in democracies outside of your doomerist fantasies, especially two years after the initial shutdowns. Even the PRC isn't forcing people to vaccinate - their relatively low vax rate among old folks is one of their big weakness in their zero-COVID policy. And those guys freel...

Re: Why did Pelosi cross the road?

My apologies. I should have taken him more literally, which would only heighten the ridiculousness of his statement. Communism/Facism is bad, enslavement is worse. The COVID restrictions in the PRC at their worst was mass imprisonment, not slavery. Pick one: an African in the ante-bellum South, a r...
