Re: How Did You Learn of Harry Browne?
I knew about him from his presidential runs and was only vaguely aware of his investment writing. I read Fail-Safe Investing when it came out in 1999, but it seemed way to conservative. Why would you put all that money in cash when you could make so much more in the stock market? I opened my first I...

As expressed in the quote below...craigr wrote: I think leveraged investing is a tremendously bad idea. Taking on debt to invest in the market has been the downfall of many.

I use the London PM Fixing price on the WSJ commodities page.

Any of these approaches are probably fine as long as you're consistent about them.

Re: Can anyone in the world beat the market?
I always chuckle when I hear a story of the guy who started in the mailroom and became the CEO.
Hey, I worked in a mailroom when I was 17. And now you're telling me it might not pay off?
9 months of my life down the drain...

Re: Can anyone in the world beat the market?
...what would Browne say about this question? He also mentioned that these people have a lot of talent and spend years developing that talent. Most people simply aren't going to function at that level. Thorp is a mathematical genius. Buffett is a brilliant businessman. Soros is...well, I'm not sure...

Re: Tanked position: sell or hold?
When I converted everything to the PP last year, I couldn't decide when I should sell my existing investments, so I set a date when I would sell everything, regardless of the prices on that day. Now I have no idea whether I could have done better, because it's a done deal and I don't track those sto...

Re: TIPS for cash component?
With TIPS you have principal risk and thus they are unsuitable for the cash piece, IMHO. As I have written many times before, though, ibonds are a terrific TIPS-like instrument and are perfect for the cash piece. So is the key difference between them that TIPS have principal risk while I-bonds do n...

Re: Where do you store your gold?
My gold is inside my house, I do not own a safe, but I doubt anyone could find it, short of a complete tear-down of the house, and even then who knows... The only thing that would (slightly) worry me is if the place were to burn down. Would you be able to find your possibly melted gold then? Well, ...

Re: Permanent Portfolio at Schwab
I use Schwab for both my IRA and my 401k (through a brokerage window) and have it split up this way: * VTI 25% * SHY 25% * TLT 25% * SGOL 5% These ETFs have about the lowest expense ratios you're likely to find. The remaining 20% is in physical gold outside of the accounts. I also have some PRPFX...
