Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

The one thing I do as tactical allocations are to move assets I think will gain in tax shelters and those that will lose in taxable accounts. I’ve been pretty successful with that. I also utilize a trust where I am the trustee but neither I nor spouse are beneficiaries. Our heirs are beneficiaries a...

Re: Buy, Borrow, Die. Legally Never pay Taxes.

Hope I am not spoiling the fun, but in order to really compare the costs of a margin loan you have to compare it to a futures portfolio where you can borrow much cheaper than on margin but all gains are realized in the tax year. I’m not sure about the US, but Canada only has one type of capital gains.

Suppose I link my car to some satoshis. Then what?
If a car’s ownership was linked to a satoshi and you transfer ownership of that satoshi then you could transfer ownership of the car.

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

Yes you can have a unique satoshi that can represent a real item. Whether anyone is doing that right now using the bitcoin blockchain I don’t know. A company who wanted to secure their supply chain might use a private blockchain and companies that wanted to prevent imitation products might not find ...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

I don't think people are using it the way you want to think about it. But I think there are other services that do and I won't pretend to be a bitcoin blockchain developer and understand the intricacies but what I do know is that bitcoin is what is called a layer 1 blockchain and then there are laye...

Re: What is your prediction for the future of the forum?

As a mechanical engineer who has studied thermodynamics I was ashamed that there may have been this property that I was not aware of and the first two posts should have been clear enough but because the typo wasn't fixed I assumed it wasn't a typo. Anyway, let's hope for an increase in enthalpy then...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

What i am curious about is, what does a satoshi actually do that has value? You said that data can be "attached to it". How is this useful? Is it like a secret messaging system? What a satoshi can "do" is to keep a record of who owns what on the bitcoin blockchain. This could be used for anything t...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

The main difference between gold and bitcoin is a bitcoin has no practical use. It doesn't have physical properties and it doesn't "do" anything. All you can do with a bitcoin to my knowledge is pass it back and forth. I'm happy to engage in this type of discussion. I actually think it is important...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

Can you name a few? I have never heard of a single practical use for a bitcoin so I'm interested. I think some parallels can be drawn with gold. If gold has a practical use, it's financial value gives incentives to find alternatives. There is also quite a bit of friction when you move/trade it whic...

Re: Withdrawal rates and size of nest egg needed in current negative real interest rate world

Real estate gives very similar results (and risk exposure) to the PP unlevered assuming you picked a location where the land value acts as a store of value. You are then forced to do something productive on the land in order to offset the carrying costs. A rental will have the credit risk of the ren...

Re: Dragon Portfolio

Okay, so if our starting point is the PP and we make a presumption that forum members can accept that because the future performance whether relative or absolute of each asset’s market at any time is uncertain so for an abundance of reasons a 4x25% allocation is a reasonable starting point, then any...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

Oh I am just adding to the list of features. But the use cases still require transactions on the network to occur so you could technically come up with a DCF value for bitcoin. Personally I wished bitcoin had no other use other than pure money/store of value so we don’t have to worry about other use...

Re: I think it’s time to move into crypto

I can see that say a Bitcoin has intrinsic value because it takes a lot of energy to produce it. Just as it takes work to produce gold. Say all the gold in the world was mined and sold. Supply of gold only coming from people who choose to sell gold and vice versa. Does intrinsic value say that gold...

Re: Does PP Only Work In Times of Declining Bond Yields?

This is something I struggle with. I am in a position where we can live on my wife's income and my income can go straight to savings. So given my high savings rate and the fact that my rewards checking account offers me 3.5% interest, do I really need to take on the risk of investments at all? The ...

Re: Does PP Only Work In Times of Declining Bond Yields?

PP won't cut it, because it's a capital preservation strategy. As I alluded to before, the PP's recent outperformance may have misled or caused some of us to forget what should be a given, that the PP is expected to preserve purchasing power with lower volatility than gold and also to produce a mod...

Re: Does PP Only Work In Times of Declining Bond Yields?

The other thing is, if someone wants to time the bond market by shorting LTTs, they need to be able to time the exit as well. The PP, even at a time when a lot of forum members can’t stay the course, allows me to confidently stay invested because I am objective about it. If you take a speculative po...

Re: Does PP Only Work In Times of Declining Bond Yields?

The problem in your argument, as I see it, is you are failing to realize I’m not repaying the $100k with cheaper dollars in one year, because I’m forced to sit on the $100k in a 0% MMF for the full time frame. The problem I see with some people on the forum is that they impose their personal situat...
