Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

And I doubt Scott said trolls are a good thing. In any case, the problem is not patent trolls. The problem is really not even other people who hold patents. It's the patent system itself. It's sort of like--for those of us who oppose welfare, the problem is not the people who sign up to get it. If ...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

I listened to part of a podcast he did with someone, maybe Tom Woods. He said something very similar in the podcast, so I wasn't as surprised to see it here. But you are totally right. It's just a comical statement to make about yourself. Even if it's true, you don't want to be the one making that ...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

Beats me, but I can certainly picture that someone would try to act endearing for a public video, but in actuality may not be quite so endearing, which could be seen in an obscure chat forum or whatever you call this place. That's true, and the purple bowtie man was already on his side. Maybe I jus...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

I actually understand the IP system. I understand patents. I get patent trolls. I get taxes. I get it all. You people can never ask an honest question or whatever. I don't get it. I am am probably quite literally the greatest expert on the planet on this small set of issues and I am willing to talk...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

Except you peopel can't seem to be honest and fair in representing others' views. I never said "I don't mind" trolls. I simply said they are the least of the problem You said they were like a small tax and I lumped you in with Scott, who said they are “a good thing.” Kind of the way you l...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

Actually I disagree. Patent trolls are not really the issue. What they do is legal, and all they usually want is a little fee. In fact, based on my very limited understanding of what "patent trolls" are, I actually consider them to be a very good thing. Because they're "working the s...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

But it's perfectly okay in your view for other people to enjoy a creator's song or movie without paying a penny, even though the creator has specified that they are supposed to pay a certain amount of money before they do so? how many times have you wandered arond town and heard some Beatles song a...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

I must be a total loser for thinking that if I want to enjoy a song or a movie I should be willing to pay the creator's asking price. This is a typical strawman; this is not the anti-IP position at all. The anti-IP view is that laws based on the idea of ownership of patterns of information, are unj...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

Another thing you should do is to provide some examples of how creators will still be able to profit from the investment of time/money that they have put into creating a work of art or technology (assuming the work actually has sufficient value to other people) and won't lose all value to free ride...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

Reading your site, I saw you mentioned patent trolls. I had completely forgot about them. I think there was an episode of 60 Minutes a bout them once upon a time. If not, perhaps a popular article. That’s something you and CT-Scott should really mention early on if you want to win the hearts and mi...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

But, I also won't shy away from the "it's not my problem" statement, either. How much were we required to worry about people making buggy whips when someone invented the first automobile? A lot of "innocent" hard-working people may have been peacefully involved in the buggy whip...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

Isn't one way to compensate creators a one-time payment for their creations? (The payment could obviously be negotiated.) It doesn't seem obvious to me that a creator (or anyone else) necessarily has a "right" to continue to extract monetary value from a creation for a long period of time...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

One aspect to all of this that I don't think we've discussed much (I think I touched upon it in an earlier post) is the fact that the ability/freedom for someone to "build upon" the ideas/inventions of others who came before them is a wonderful thing, and is critical for improving on thes...

I never did support it Just to be clear: when you first joined an Intellectual Property Practice Group, you didn’t support IP. Correct. I have never supported IP, whatever that means. But given the existence of these laws, there are a need for professionals to help people navigate this system. Agai...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

But they have no *evidence* for any contrary view. They say they support IP because it encourages innovation, at a reasonable enough cost. They can't tell you what these benefits are or what the cost it, however. Everyone knows IP has a cost, and prima facie restricts liberty and distorts the free ...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

I agree with you, especially that it's very subjective. One has to argue that "Apple" belongs to the Beatles when it comes to brands involving music. They have to establish that as they sue Apple Corporation for Apple iTunes. As you said, it is not apparent as it is with the bicycle that ...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

So, yes, it is what you said--or implied. When you say you don't see an argument to "change it" you are assuming that the status quo is the default position and someone arguing against a given law has the burden of changing it. You don't assume that the burden of justifying an extant law ...

Re: Intellectual Property (IP) & Theft

Let's just look at a simple hypothetical. If I create say a movie which is meant for public consumption, do I get to have any say in how it gets sold? what do you mean, "do you get to have any say"? This way of wording it is vague and ambiguous. You can do whatever you want dude. But if y...

So in other words you are in favor of the status quo, whatever it might be Is that what I said? I said I haven't seen a satisfactory argument to change it. So, yes, it is what you said--or implied. When you say you don't see an argument to "change it" you are assuming that the status quo ...
