Hey RL, I think you are expressing what a lot of us think sometimes. Since you asked, here's my advice: Stick with your investment plan. If you're becoming disenamored with it, then research to find another one and convince yourself that it's really better than your current plan. Once you are convin...

Re: What happens to I-bonds if rates plummet again
Thanks, Barrett. That's my situation, exactly. This all makes perfect sense to me. I'm all-in and have been for many years. The challenge is that as I watch my seniors getting up in age, it is apparent that our investment plan needs to be simple enough to hand off with confidence. And to Vinny's poi...

Re: What happens to I-bonds if rates plummet again
This is what I thought as well, and was exactly what I was doing. However, after hearing multiple horror stories of executors struggling to unwind estates, I am working to streamline my investments. One of the elements to be simplified is to liquidate both my and my wife's TD accounts and just move ...

Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio
I'm not questioning it, but I can't quite understand how you get +/- 6% by scaling from the HBPP +/-10% bands.
Can somebody (gently) explain the maths?

Re: Golden Butterfly Portfolio
I have never found anything canonical, but have just scaled from the PP.
In other words, I rebalance at +/- 8% = +/-10% (from PP) * (20% allocations / 25% allocations)
Still hit that pretty infrequently.

Hi Barrett,
It's possible that this is something different than what you are referencing, but I recently discovered and have been using the planner calculator at this site: https://i-orp.com/Plans/extended.html
I have found it to be very helpful.

Re: I-bonds from tax refund
Hey Vinny, I feel your pain on this. That tax software can be quite a challenge if you want to do something that isn't what the programmers expected. I know it's too late for you this year, but just to give you an alternate data point, I use turbotax and have bought savings bonds with my refund with...

Understood. But, there has to be a market share inflection point, when the index funds have no underlying price discovery and things go crazy. I agree that, in principle, your assertion does make sense, Shrugged. One metric that I would take really seriously to indicate that such a think is happeni...

Re: When will indexing blow up?
There is an inference that holding an S&P 500 index fund is more volatile than holding an actively traded fund but the author provides no data to back this up, whatsoever. The author addresses volatility of an S&P 500 index fund as though it is the only asset held in a portfolio and says it'...

Re: Liquidate Some Roth Space to Buy Physical Gold?
One other option that I forgot to mention is that Fidelity offers segregated allocated storage of Gold Eagles within both Roth and Traditional IRAs. While it is not as efficient, we also use that as a tool to hold physical while not having to withdrawl from the IRAs. As @flyingpylon mentions, earlie...

Re: Liquidate Some Roth Space to Buy Physical Gold?
Hey Stuper1, I think it's a pretty common situation that many of us have: being heavy on the tax advantaged accounts and light on after-tax funds. On the other hand, funds in a Roth IRA are highly valuable. When I found myself in a similar situation to yours, I took a middle path. That is, I still c...
