Re: Past performance is no guarantee of future results
Everyone should be familiar with the phrase in the subject line. My question is, for the purposes of financial planning, how do you estimate your future investment returns? Say you’ve identified an asset allocation that has returned an average of 10% nominal over the last 50 years ( std dev 8.8 ). ...

LEXCX holds a sizeable proportion in Union Pacific, and some Berkshire Hathaway stock. Initial equal weight not rebalanced will tend to end up like that, more average weighting in the stock(s) that did well. Rebalancing has a tendency to reduce the concentration risk, whilst still tending to achiev...

Re: Tyler interviewed!
I just picked it semi-randomly. I was going to say New England, but I didn’t mean a Cliff Claven Boston accent or a Fred Gwynne in a Stephen King movie in Maine accent. So I went with one that most people probably aren’t familiar with. When I grew up in Rhode Island there was a heavy Italian presen...

I just listened from beginning to end. What a pleasure to hear. I feel like the interviewer knows your material well and did his homework before the session, i.e. there were no lazy questions. The Shannon’s Demon thing made me think of something I always want to ask: There are a lot of people who s...

Re: Is anyone else buying TIPS?
Cash investors should consider taxation as well as inflation. I-bonds have superior tax treatment compared to TIPS: I-bonds come with 30 years tax deferral, interest compounded semi-annually. TIPS do not. I-bonds create extra tax deferred space. TIPS in tax-advantage accounts take up that space. I-...

Thanks for posting that conversation, Hal. Very interesting as it deals with reality and not drama. And, to channel my inner Vinny, I may watch it again at some point. Thanks for the homage. However, to do it correctly you have to start listening to it again as soon as you finished listening to it ...

Re: When will indexing blow up?
The cap weighted index reflect yesterdays best/worst. Buy the index and you weight more into yesterdays winners. Bogle suggested the ultimate being to buy initially in equal weights and hold that forever, let it find its own cap weighting. but that wasn't something that Vanguard could market. John ...

I looked at all the ones that Mountaineer and Dualstow recommended. I also reviewed several that had been profiled in Kiplinger's. Had issues with all of them. But did not want to make this a prolonged exercise or, even worse, not get it done tonight. Finally decided on Dualstow's first recommendati...

Re: Past performance is no guarantee of future results
My question is, for the purposes of financial planning, how do you estimate your future investment returns? The whole thing just seems like a crapshoot, which I guess it is at some level. Personally, I just take the Baseline Return as detailed here => https://portfoliocharts.com/portfolio/long-term...
