Gave up on "pure" Permanent Portfolio in EU
As an EU citizen, I've always had my doubts about the bonds portion of the PP and that was five years ago. And I tried but two years later, I gave them up. One of the friendly people here asked me for an update of my portfolio. It's doing fine. Roughly, my portfolio is now looking as follows: Gold 1...

In my European country, you also don't pay VAT on gold.
Re: Voter ID
We have this in The Netherlands. You definitely must bring your ID card or your passport. On these, the issuing city is printed. But then again, we don't havea huge illegal immigrants groups here. We do have immigrants from our former colonies, but they're not illegal and more or less integrated mea...

Re: Long time lurker saying hi
Prior to covid, my family would get together twice a month for dinners and it would be paid out of that fund. My instructions were to invest it in a way that it would be able to pay for dinners in perpetuity. Wow, that is pretty nifty. By far the best combination of finance and family that I've hea...

I don't understand...who is holding japanese and european bonds then? Is it all being held by the central banks? Old topic, but I figured it's worth replying. As I understand, here in The Netherlands, insurance companies, pension funds and housing cooperatives are tied to regulations that more or l...

To be honest, I don't like these questions. What do you want with them, check the performance? The PP isn't about performance, it's about risk-adjusted performance.

That's a good one, and certainly puts things in perspective. What I always found weird, is that it may never really concern you. A couple of years ago, I quit my job and started subcontracting in IT. Before I started however, I asked experienced freelancers: "how hard were you hit in the 2009 r...

As a European, most topics look completely and utterly like, I don't know, an extremely biased yet very detailed review of the divorce of the neighbors next door.
I'm sure it's relevant when you're American, but even then, lots of topics are just link dumping.

By all means, use it in your variable portfolio if you wish. Exactly. The PP method doesn't say you should never use bitcoin. It just says that as the basis, stick to the usual suspects. You can actually make your VP as large as you want it to be. My VP is ~6% of my PP. Half of that is in Bitcoin.

And there are indeed TIPS/ IL Bonds for the EU. For example: iShares € Inflation Linked Govt Bond UCITS ETF This is good news to me. The ISIN is IE00B0M62X26 and my broker (DEGIRO) does not charge costs when trading. The underlying assets aren't super great, though. France might be okay, but the re...

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
What I find funny, is that people are no longer hide they have gold in their portfolio. For example on Reddit, posters used to be silent about it. No longer so.

European inflation-linked bonds?
I just read an interview with Russell Napier, a Scotsman who writes about the market for institutional investors: https://themarket.ch/interview/russell-napier-central-banks-have-become-irrelevant-ld.2323 The following bit caught my attention: As an investor, how do I protect myself? European inflat...

It's just an insult. You know what you do? You dig your heels in and fire off a clever comeback. You don't cry to the world just because you failed to think of one. That's just your opinion. I've been at the receiving end of an endless stream of cleverly "funny" disguised verbal abuse fro...

Of all the cryptos, only Bitcoin really has my trust, and only for a single-digit percentage of my variable portfolio. There are interesting coins out there, like Monero, which is 100% focused on privacy. But that's really it (for me, at least). You were wise to decline the offers of this guy.

It would be interesting to know how they test these coins for purity. I believe there are several methods and they're not accurate all the time.
