Re: Help me understand

I don't follow the HBPP. I maintain a risk-managed PP, according to criteria I have developed for myself and my personal risk tolerance and financial objectives. And currently have no holdings in long-term bonds (or gold)! Could you please elaborate on this? What are you using as risk criteria, sig...

Re: Help me understand

By the way, the standard rule of thumb is that for every percentage-point increase in Treasury yields, an investor could expect to lose an amount equal to the bonds duration. This works for bond funds too. For those that hold TLT as the LTT component of their PP, currently TLT's duration is 17.29 ye...

Re: Help me understand

Hello all - long time reader and sporadic poster. I've read the HB book and Craig's update and I'm still feeling strange about buying 30 year bonds in today's climate. Could someone point me to a post that is helpful? Sorry for the ignorance. Feelings shouldn't have anything to do with it. If you a...

Re: Engineering Your Own SHY

As far as I can tell, if you're running a PP in an IRA and want to buy individual bonds or CDs, there's no escaping the "bond desk" and the concomitant fees, commissions, and mark-ups, which are criminally high, even at Vanguard.

Apparently I was on an extended camping trip out in the middle of nowhere when whatever happened here, happened. Re: New Shares Of Gold Fund IAU Suspended

Is this anything to be concerned about? What about for GLD and PHYS holders? The article I linked to at the top of this thread fully answers the question of whether it is a problem or not, specifically with respect to IAU and GLD. Read the article, it's short and concise! As for PHYS, it's an apple...

Re: New Shares Of Gold Fund IAU Suspended

Does this mean we should all sell IAU and buy (at least temporarily) GLD? You could do that provided you can actually sell your IAU shares. You might find that hard going now that the word is out. I actually discovered this pricing discrepancy because I was implementing a DCA purchase into IAU and ...

New Shares Of Gold Fund IAU Suspended

iShares announced today it has suspended creations in the iShares Gold Trust because strong demand in the fund had led to "temporary exhaustion of IAU shares." http://www.etf.com/sections/features-and-news/shares-gold-fund-iau-suspended Morningstar gives real time premium/discount on their site and...

It also speaks to the degraded culture of Seattle that nobody took action or even tried to call the police on this pervert. They have been completely brainwashed. There's a reason for that, it's got nothing to do with brainwashing, it's because we all know there is a snowball chance in hell of Seat...

Re: Acceptable Bond ETFs

When comparing TLT to VGLT, there are some other important factors to consider aside from duration and composition. What is the expense ratio? TLT = .15% vs. VGLT = .10% What is the average % spread?  TLT = .01% vs. VGLT = .11% What is the median premium/discount?  TLT = .02%  vs. VGLT = .07% What i...

It's been brewing for a while but it's gaining serious traction lately. The key word here is "microaggression". I read, but don't participate, very much in this forum exactly because it is by and large, unfriendly if not downright intolerant, of viewpoints that do not jibe with the Late Saint Harry Brown's opinions. From my outsider's point of view, these forums are completely predictable in their virulently ...

You may not understand his response because it's muddled and self-contradictory, and does not mention the cause behind the problem. First, he says trading in VGSH was halted by circuit breakers due to price swings. (This much is true and can be seen on a minute bar chart as I previously posted). The...

JMHO, this was the opposite of a "flash crash". Low (or zero) liquidity in the face of panic buying (into safety). Basically there was not enough of the underlying securities available to allow for ETF share creation, so the shares of the ETF began selling at a premium - for a minute or two, when tr...

Hey Drewskers, this sounds like a great option.  I believe TIAA CREF is a pretty safe institution.  Do you have to be a teacher or work for a specific employer in order to use their funds?  I would love to get 3% in my cash accounts if possible.  Can anyone invest? My understanding is the Tradition...

1.  My 403g accounts on TIAA-CREF have a "TIAA Traditional" fund that is described as an annuity, with the principle guaranteed and a minimum of 3% interest.  While this isn't the same as cash, would it not serve the same purpose?  There aren't any other attractive funds in these accounts - the sto...

Re: Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund (VMMXX) vs SHV (treasury only)

If you look into the guts of VMMXX (e.g. the actual holdings) you will find that there are a bunch of corporate bond holdings at 0% coupon.

In other words, the holder of VMMXX is paying Vanguard a .23% expense ratio to lend some of their money out for free.

Nice work if you can get it, hey?
