Re: Permanent portfolio accumulation and capital addition

Thank you for the reply, Sophie. I'm fortunate in that the majority of my money is outside of the 401k, which shouldn't make rebalancing, even in circumstances where I need to get into all but the most significant gold hold holdings, difficult. And, most of those are in tax-deferred accounts so sell...

Re: Permanent portfolio accumulation and capital addition

Also, in case your PP is spread across multiple types of accounts:  I treat additions to retirement accounts differently than taxable additions.  For retirement accounts, I split new money into the three volatile (non-cash) assets equally.  Taxable additions either go into cash or physical gold.  W...

Re: Spreadsheets to Track PP

I was using a spreadsheet in Apple's Numbers for a long time. I had columns for each asset class and rows for each portfolio of mine (IRA, Roth, etc.). I would add the current price of the ticker I held for each asset class and have my total row at the bottom multiply the number of shares I held by ...

How to monitor and rebalance your portfolio

I’ve been a member of these forums for a while now and have learned a ton about investing here. I’m hugely grateful to everyone who posts on these forums. I don’t want to overstep any bounds so please let me know if this doesn’t belong here but I just made public a tool of mine I’ve been working on ...

Re: IMPORTANT: PP FORUM GOING AWAY

That's great to hear. I just offered because I don't want to see the site go away. My main concern is that the site is up and running and I'd be willing to help that in any way. Happy to hear others are working on something.

Re: IMPORTANT: PP FORUM GOING AWAY

Why does everybody want to reinvent the wheel? Why use another platform and lose all organic traffic...? Doesn't make any sense whatsoever ??? That's fair. I just offered to run Discourse because I find it to be superior to a traditional forum and I'd feel more comfortable running it than a traditi...

Re: IMPORTANT: PP FORUM GOING AWAY

The self-hosted version of Discourse has a docker container so installs are pretty easy. They have a special install tutorial for Digital Ocean but most VPSs will be pretty trivial to do an install. $10/mo isn't bad at all. I'd want others to moderate if I run the servers though. As for migration. I...

Re: IMPORTANT: PP FORUM GOING AWAY

While I'm a late arriver to this community, I agree with most in this thread that this eclectic group of people should have a place to congregate and discuss investing as it relates to the Permanent Portfolio. I am a software engineer and comfortable running servers. I find discourse (made by the pe...

Re: Achieving the Permanent Portfolio across multiple taxable and tax advantaged accounts

Didn't you post in another thread about this situation? If so, part of your question has been answered already - namely the bit about not investing any money that you expect to spend sometime in the next 3-5 years. That's my $0.02 anyway, but it's been echoed by several people e.g. ochotona's post ...

Re: Achieving the Permanent Portfolio across multiple taxable and tax advantaged accounts

The cash would be $46,000, not $18,000. But you're probably right, keeping it as cash outside of PP is not that bad for a year if I have concrete plans to use it. My main question is surrounding the asset allocation I outlined above. Do you think those funds are appropriate for the permanent portfol...

Achieving the Permanent Portfolio across multiple taxable and tax advantaged accounts

I am trying my best to figure out how to implement the permanent portfolio as faithfully as possible but running into some difficulty due to the large percentage of funds in my 401k and its limited selection of funds. My present situation: ~ $18,800 in 401k (see funds below) ~ $20,800 in IRA ~ $5,00...

Re: Cash as income

Wow, thank you everyone for your thoughtful responses. In some sense, you might consider your expected $42k for living expenses as part of a variable portfolio, as this is money you can afford to lose (and which you actually plan on "losing"). That's a fantastic way of thinking about things. Viewed ...

Cash as income

I'm new to this forum and relatively new to the Permanent Portfolio. I've read the threads at Bogleheads, many online articles, and the Permanent Portfolio book written by this forum's Craig. I still haven't implemented the portfolio myself as I am still in the research phase, evaluating all of my o...
