Who sets the fixed rate, and how. Why should they pay us anything...competing with foreign bonds? Private sector bonds?

Lying is a requirement for politics, people dont want to know the truth. ie some lies are for the greater good. Most arent.

Free money from central banks keeps bad companies afloat. Central banks shouldnt try to mess with employment rates.

They settle billion dollar accounts between countries. Gold is a practical tool for that.

Where can I get whatever Pointedstick is smoking =) As a determinist, I mostly agree, but I'm not sure the mind can accept the reality that the future is already written. We're just monkeys and we love chimping out. And this "fear based" forum is calmer than Bogleheads, with their academic arguments...

Budd's right, gold is moribund. For centuries it was needed for trade, but now we have fiat. Yes fiat burns up but thats the idea, you're not supposed to hold it.
