School fees in PP?

Hi all My kids are 3 and 5 and I hope to send them to private schools So I'll be spending $20k x 2 x 13 roughly or $500k assuming no scholarships or aid College in my country is free How would you save this money? If it was just a 5y horizon I'd lean towards cash or bonds, but given it's up to 15y a...

Re: Another phase completed!

I get that you want to become as informed as possible prior to risking your hard earned money BUT you can read as much as you want and you still won't be able to predict the future... at some point you have to take the plunge Why don't you start with a small slug of your net worth (say 10-20%) and p...

Global PP or UK PP?

Hi all I'm very interested as to how people have set up Global PPs or UK PPs. I know the conventional advice, but it has always struck me as suboptimal - mainly the gold component. Given the importance of the US economy on a global scale, gold would react as intended to any US monetary shock. Not so...

Re: Best Allocation: Living off just the interest

The question was whether or not a HBPP or GB should theoretically have a different weighting (primarily in its cash component) as it scales due to its underlying principles since a very wealthy person would be at less risk of liquidating lagging assets to make ends meet during a recession. No, acco...

Why wouldn't you just go 100% global equity index fund with a 2-3% dividend yield?

Re: GBP hedged treasury fund?

Why do you want a "global PP"? Do you live in the UK but spend a lot of time traveling outside the country? My reasons are led by desiring a global equity portion. Here's why. Equities - UK is tiny part of the global economy (c5% by market cap?) - FTSE All Share is skewed towards energy a...

GBP hedged treasury fund?

Hi all I am in the UK and considering putting together a global PP. With gold and equities this is easy, but is there a gbp hedged long term treasury fund? I believe treasuries are the global safe haven whereas UK gilts are subject to more local issues (ie brexit). Or should I just stick to gilts an...

Re: New UK Portfolio Setup

I have been thinking more and more about what to put into my ISA. In my wife's ISA we are definitely holding gold funds, so that's off the table. In my ISA, however, should we hold gilts or equities? Here's how both are taxed: Gilts: - No capital gains tax if sold or held to maturity - Interest inco...

What broker do you use?

How do you hold your cash allocation?

How about FTSE 250 vs. FTSE 100 / All Share?

Re: Is the PP going to hold up?

Aren't you happy that it's up 5.7% in the last 12 months? Sure beats a savings account at the bank. Keep in mind though that a PP has historically suffered drawdowns as much as 20% or more, so it's definitely not as safe as a savings account. Personal CAGR for PP is around 4.25% since I started. My...

New UK Portfolio Setup

Hi all I've been a long term lurker and have read the (new) book. I am in the process of setting up my portfolio and have a few questions regarding each asset. First, some context. I am 32yo and am hoping to FIRE within 5 years or so. As such, I intend to contribute far more than my ISA contribution...

Re: New portfolio sense check(UK)

Hi, I started my portfolio 5 months ago after reading plenty of books, forum posts and blogs. Now I am up an running I would like a sense check on my options to see if I have grasped the correct principals and choices available to me. My investment: 700 per month, from a zero balance Based: UK Sto...
