Re: Yay PP!

Not at all harsh. In fact, I appreciate your post, because I can’t tell what the lurkers out there are thinking. As a semi-lurker, I feel like this issue has been covered many times over the past several years, both with Budd and with Mathjak. Somehow they both end up coming back and dominating eve...

Re: I Bonds for Permanent Portfolio

No opinion on iBonds per se, but I am strongly against the little optimizations . I think they are a distraction. I call it "optimizing the small". Local Optimizations for the mathematically inclined. They can make you feel like you are optimizing while you are actually doing nothing that will have...

Re: The PP, marginal utility, and investment "faith"

When I started with the PP I struggled with this for any asset allocation. This was for a high six-digit sum. My approach was to slowly buy into the position over the course of about 6 months. That let me test out my comfort level, get used to the increasing investment, and smooth out any risk of bu...

Re: Safe Withdrawal Rates

Stupid question, but how did you choose that (conservative IMHO) number - 3% - something that's tad less than the notorious 4% ? If I recall correctly 3% is even lower than the perpetual withdrawal rate of the classic HBPP. Is that your intention ? Not a stupid question at all. The short answer is:...

A market cap weighted strategy though? Good luck with that one... I just retired (early) at the end of October. Are you saying I'm screwed? :/ I can't help but feel my timing is the worst ever, as so many things are in flux - inflation, house prices (or cost to build - we're building), market volat...

Third, the person’s assessment of whether he is in imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury must be reasonable, meaning that a supposed “reasonable person” would consider the threat to be sufficiently dangerous to put him in fear of death or serious bodily injury. A person’s own subjective...

Is it possible to have an "everything" bubble?
My initial thought is "no", as at least the unit of measure (US dollar?) must not be in a bubble if everything else is?

Without the PP I would never have bought any long-term treasuries, and would have missed out on a lot. To be honest I have no idea how to tell when it's a bad idea to include them in the portfolio. Funny, without the PP I likely wouldn't have had as much equities exposure over the last 3-4 years. T...

Perhaps what really matters is only what the markets think has happened or will happen so given that it's a possibility that the markets behave somewhat disconnected with our personal experience. I think there's an assumption in the above statement that there is a free market, with rational investo...

Like international business class air travel. John McEnroe voice on: "Five thousand bucks, are you effing kidding me?" Totally worth it. I once had a vaccine passport. It wasn't called that, but it was a yellow passport sized booklet that listed my vaccinations for diseases in third world countries. I misplaced it at some point. It did function like a passport. I can't recall if I had to show it at borders, or send it to embassies i...

I actually would very much like to see a national sales tax implemented. Taxing consumption rather than income & savings makes a huge amount of sense. For those of us who were already taxed on the income that is now in our savings, you're suggesting we get taxed again based on this shift...isn't th...

Perhaps one of the biggest things we can do to maintain some semblance of privacy is to use cash payment at retailers. I only use cash in restaurants / bars. By keeping cash alive, at least a small amount of privacy can be maintained. +1. It also keeps the banks from taking a cut of the transaction...

I just use the bill pay function of my local credit union to get funds there...haven't had an issue with it/need to use wire transfers.

But you still have to file FBAR and the income tax form when your holdings hit the appropriate thresholds.
My CPA advised me otherwise. Not saying the IRS will agree, but when I inquired about bullion held overseas I was told such reporting wasn't required.

Would you consider something like BullionVault, which has storage in Singapore, Switzerland, etc? You can have your holdings in specific reserved bars (by serial#) vs generic allocated storage, if you like.

I'm not affiliated, but am a customer.

I think if we peel the onion back, most thread back and forths on the PP (or any portfolio on this and other boards) come down to a discussion of whether history will hold or if "this time is different." I think this completely explains the gold vs. BTC threads that have popped up as of late. So I ...
