Re: Antifragility Podcast from Nassim Taleb

Here's another article talking about being antifragile financially. A lot of the concepts are already built in to the PP:

Re: Not many options in company's 401(k) plan

Ask the administrator about a PCRA or brokerage window as well. That's what I use for my 401k with Schwab. You basically can invest as if it were an IRA. Here's a letter I got from one of the representatives. The fee mentioned in the body of the letter has since been waived. Dear XXXXXXX Thank you f...

Not sure, but I've got a standing desk and I love it. I get antsy sitting for too long.

Re: PP End of Year Predictions

I have been in for less than a year, but stocks have been far and away my worst performing asset, so I'm grateful for the diversification.

Re: Tighter Rebalancing Bands For Low-Return Environment?

I look forward to hearing from everyone on this. My PP is in my 401k and all funds are commission-free, so there is no monetary cost for frequent rebalancing for me.

I think he meant physical diversification rather than buying international stocks (i.e. storing some gold offshore). That was my understanding anyway.

Re: Jumping into ETFs

If I recall, The Permanent Portfolio book says that ETFs are fine, but recommends keeping maybe 5% of your total portfolio in physical gold.

Re: I keep seeing GLD being recommended over IAU

You must be out of your mind to own a (paper!) gold etf loaded with counterparty risk :D :D :D ps: there are etfs without counterparty risk, ZKB has one and i think there's at least 1 more. Newbie question: What do you mean by counterparty risk? Most of my gold is in SGOL, which is backed by physic...

Seconded. I was also really new to investing when I read it and it gave me a GREAT overview of the basics. Very helpful introduction.

Re: New portfolio sense check(UK)

Later down the line you might consider holding a small proportion of the Gold in an EFT just for ease of rebalancing. How much gold are you buying each month? Google says that 700 pounds is about $1,100, which is about the price of an ounce of gold right now. It might be a good idea to put some int...

Re: What if you don't remember what you paid for bullion?

I've got some bank records - good advice. I can probably just use the charge, minus the sales tax, and divide by the spot price around the time to figure out the price per coin. I used to buy from the local coin shop, but realized that paying sales tax was essentially taking an immediate loss and ha...

What if you don't remember what you paid for bullion?

If/when I need to sell my gold and silver, how can I calculate my gains or losses if I didn't realize I needed to know what I paid until recently? Should I just try to do my best guess?

Re: Why do you use the PP?

Today, as inflation and interest rates slowly creep upwards, non-US investors flock to the "least dirty shirt and least low-yielding sort-of safe haven (for now) US Dollar". The rising US Dollar kills gold, all other metals, and oil (why I lost my job here in Texas in March. Yes, that got my attent...

Re: What do you think of Doug Casey? Is he legit?

He is definitely intelligent and always worth reading, but he makes a lot of predictions that simply do not happen (crippling depression by 1983 in Crisis Investing, for example), though at other times he can be prescient. On the whole though, I definitely prefer Browne's market agnosticism.

Re: If I go PP, do I still need a Cash Emergency Fund?

I keep mine separate. The emergency fund for me is for unforeseen events now. My Permanent Portfolio is for my future. Personally, I don't want to use my emergency fund money to rebalance if the other pieces drop. I feel that that would add risk in an area intended for security.

Re: TLO better then TLT ?

First time poster here and fairly new to investing and the Permanent Portfolio. I'd like to resurrect this thread since my brokerage window with Schwab offers TLO commission free. It looks like the expense ratio has dropped to 0.1% and total net assets increased to ~$177 million. All else being equa...
