Re: Rebalancing and Timing
To avoid this dilemma, I set a fixed day in the year in which I check the bands (20/30 in my case). If the portfolio has hit the bands at this specific date, I rebalance. The rest of the days I do nothing with it. As you will only check (and maybe rebalance) once a year, you can use narrower rebalan...

Re: EU-PP and PPeers
I will stick to my plan, so I will rebalance (if needed) at the fixed date that I decided that I would check the portfolio every year, and using the rebalancing bands that I decided.

J.P. Morgan index historical data ?
Hello. Do you know how or where can I get the historical data of the J.P. MORGAN GBI EMU Investment Grade Index? According to a fund that tracks it (Amundi IS JP Morgan EMU Govies AE-C - ISIN LU1050470373), this index is available at Reuters (.JPMEMUIG) and Bloomberg (JPEIEMUI). I would like to use ...

Re: PP Europe (Germany)
During 2015 and 2016 the 30-year German bund yield went to 0.5% and even below. The current yield is 0.88%, so yes, the yield can still go down and the bund up. If at 1% you are skipping long bonds, when are you going to buy them? When the yield is at 1.5%? At 2%? At 3%? Maybe then you will think th...

Re: PP Europe (Germany)
I think that for bonds the closest you can get to a PP in euros is to buy the longest German bond available, which currently is the one that expires at 2048 and ISIN DE0001102432 (current yield 0.90%). Remember that you get the long bonds not for the yield but for the deflation protection. If you pr...

Re: How does the PP respond to a devaluing currency
If there is inflation also in the US then gold will work as expected. In case of an euro-only inflation we can get some protection by holding international stocks. So a possible allocation is: - 12.5% eurozone stocks - 12.5% global stocks - 25% gold - 25% cash in euros - 25% 30-year german bund (the...

Feedly has a feature that could be used to remove unwanted forum topics. It is called Mute Filters but it is only available to paying customers which is not my case.

Re: How to subscribe to new topics (and not to replies)?
Thanks, I use Feedly so an RSS feed would be an option, but unfortunately the feed that you linked includes topics from all the forums, not just the "Permanent Portfolio Discussion" forum. I tried to get (or build) a URL to include topics restricted to 1 forum but I couldn't find it.

How to subscribe to new topics (and not to replies)?

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
What happens to this allocation if the euro appreciates for example a 20% to the level where it was just 3 years ago? 3 of the 4 assets have currency exchange risk in this portfolio.

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
Just to say something in favor of the Euro PP, during the 18 years of the euro the portfolio has got a 6.36% annualized nominal return ( http://www.carterapermanente.es/evolucion-cartera-permanente/ ). So it has been doing its job during these years. As always past returns do not guarantee future re...

Re: Starting EU PP, doubts about the bonds part
Interesting analysis on the bonds part for Europeans (in Spanish):
http://www.carterapermanente.es/bonos-europeos/
Its conclusion: stay with German bonds, or maybe Dutch, Finnish or Austrian bonds, and avoid the rest.

Re: Backtesting the PP in Other Countries (Economies)
That's an interesting idea. I'm not sure Germany alone would be an appropriate source for EMU bonds as a whole, but maybe I could properly weight them. Brownehead did an interesting analysis on the performance of the European countries bonds in the event of a deflation (which we had during the rece...

Re: Backtesting the PP in Other Countries (Economies)
OK, I understand that having 2 separate settings, one for the currency and another for the inflation could be too messy. But maybe you could just add a new "country" called "eurozone" with this configuration: - data only from 1999. I know the timeframe is short, but it's better t...

Re: Backtesting the PP in Other Countries (Economies)
Hi Tyler, thanks a lot for the multi-country support. This is really great for us living outside the US. I have 2 suggestions for you: 1) Instead of splitting the analysis by "countries", I think it would be more useful if splitted by "currencies". I understand that the generaliz...

Re: Backtesting the PP in Other Countries (Economies)
That sounds great, thanks!
Will you add support for other currencies like the euro?
Just having the end of the year conversion from the USD to the EUR (or any other currency) should be enough to generate all the assets values in EUR and evaluate the portfolios using assets in EUR.

Re: Backtesting the PP in Other Countries (Economies)
This is a possible source of data for the German bonds: https://index.db.com/dbiqweb2/index/iboxx_euro_sovereign_germany_15_year It is in fact a index, and not exactly the 30-year bund, but could be used a reasonable substitute. Another option is to use the value that Brownehead has calculated in hi...

Hi Tyler, I join the congratulations, your work is really really useful for us. Re: Planning to set up a portfolio
Yes, but this is the direct impact of currency deprecation. What I mean is that in the case of big currencies like the euro, a local high inflation will cause an increase in gold demand from europeans and an additional gold price increase.
