Re: Royal Mint and UK coin tax advantages
Yes that is definitely true and worthwhile having some in coins however in my view depending on the size of your overall portfolio it's also worthwhile considering overseas storage in case of gold confiscation - I don't like the idea of any UK institution knowing how much I have purchased in case th...

Re: New portfolio sense check(UK)
For my FtSE All share tracker - i use Scottish Widows - they are much cheaper than vanguard with an all in cost of 0.07% pa Short Term Gilts , you can use National Savings & Investments - as it is fully backed by Her Majesty's Treasury - Short Term Gilts are not worth investing in unless you hav...

Re: UK holders of PHGP eligible for compensation
its not necessaily a nightmare , but it is a big challenge so far because advisers here mainly focus on volatility as a measure of risk, and so when they meet clients they fill out a risk profiling questionnaire, and if a client comes out at high risk, this would entail a higher allocation to equiti...

Re: What length of UK Treasury Bonds ?
Toby - i think people with £1 Million go direct to the treasury via the DMo site - also for the cash portion you could use national savings which is 100% backed by the treasury so you have no default risk or counterparty risk there, this is cheaper than buying short term gilts and you can rebalance ...

Re: What length of UK Treasury Bonds ?
Another thing about purchasing long term bonds in funds like vanguard, spdr, and the more expensive ones like henderson, is that they all have OTC derivatives exposure in them - which is potentially another risk so i agree with gizmo rat to stick within the 50k per fund per name rule if possible, an...

Re: UK holders of PHGP eligible for compensation
Hi Kev i am assuming that HSBC as a sharedealing service had to compensate, and not HSBC as custodian of the gold right? You can buy PHGP through Hargreaves Lansdown but like any share dealing service their spreads leave much to be desired. i am a UK Based financial services professional looking to ...

Re: Gold for Deflation?
Interesting comments Bud I would say that what makes the PP a PP is the Optimal identification of assets that will ALWAYS be held, so that these assets can take advantage of ALL economic environments as and when they arise. Harry Browne identified stock, bonds, gold, cash as Optimal (i suppose) beca...

Re: Gold for Deflation?
Hi All I bet Deep Risk does'nt go into behavioral dynamics of investors? or does it? who would wait for 20 years to prove to themselves whether Equities are a good hedge for inflation ? (especially when there is Japan as an example) It seems to me that Equity markets are always positively correlate...

I am setting up a UK based permanent portfolio, where under the long term bonds 25% allocation, i have the choice of the i shares IGLT ETF http://uk.ishares.com/en/rc/products/IGLT in Craigs book, he mentions that since the average duration of this fund is only 13 years, that i can increase my weigh...

Re: Synthetic Gold?
appreciate the response guys
given that global central banks store gold as value in their vaults, i would imagine that even if it were remotely viable at some stage that they would find a way of confiscating or nationalizing the technological process for doing so

Re: Synthetic Gold?
I suppose the real question is whether there could be any other store of value that has the same characteristics of gold that central banks could turn to , and turn to pretty quickly. Yes Gold has been currency for 5000+ years and all the central banks hold it which is reason enough to hold it, but ...

Synthetic Gold?
I don’t know if this is a stupid question or not but Can Gold be synthetically made? What if it could ? I’ve read one the internet that it would be technologically too expensive to do so, but what if one day it could be made? What would the possible scenorios be for existing bullion holders? Would p...
