Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Another theory that fits the facts is that there's a new virus floating around that's sufficiently dangerous both in terms of known and unknown short- and long-term effects to severely disrupt society, and that we now have multiple vaccines that work really well at preventing it. I'm with you on th...

Re: Withdrawal rates and size of nest egg needed in current negative real interest rate world

How does one avoid all asset classes? By living paycheck to paycheck!. But, yeah, good point, vincent. I think a lot of investors get too deep into the woods of looking for the ideal asset allocation combined with focusing too much on short-term performance. With a Bogleheads 60/40, PP, GB or whate...

Re: Why the Allies Won

The U.S. did commit war atrocities. But not to the degree of Germany or Japan. However, there was / is the moral question of the use of bombs on civilians. There the Allies outdid both the Nazi's and the Japanese combined. Isn't this almost surely attributable to the war NOT being fought here in th...

That's fine, I82, but I think it's asking a lot from the rest of us to be trying to figure out which 50% is the real person posting and which 50% is a sarcastic version.

Re: Withdrawal rates and size of nest egg needed in current negative real interest rate world

One could just replace the long/short Treasury barbell with mostly ITT's and a smattering of iBonds and call it a day (that's what I've done for now), or if younger and still years away from retirement use EE and iBonds for the entire bond/cash allocation since they're the only Treasury securities ...

Re: Finding Stuff To Make You Angry?

Tomfoolery's method of sarcastically imitating his opponents seems to be catching on! It's getting so that every reader of this site needs to keep track of the true positions of every poster, or else it's hard to understand anything. It was mildly entertaining at first but it got tiresome a long ti...

Re: What is your prediction for the future of the forum?

Alas, I have little hope that this forum is headed in a good direction. Even this thread has already devolved into a political "discussion". I don't know where the happy medium is for political discussions, but, from my point of view, that is at least 80% of the content here. I'm a fairly liberal pe...

Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

That sounds like a drag, jalanlong. Here in (60%) liberal CT one can see significant lifting of restrictions pretty much every day now. Any kind of statewide mask regulations went away on 5/19. Gym is about 80% unmasked now. I mean, officially, people who are not fully vaccinated are still asked to ...

Just curious if anyone else ended up with negative cash positions as a result of this reverse split. Wife and I both hold IAU in several accounts where we also have cash positions of just a few dollars. After the "split", those cash positions went slightly negative and I cad to sell off a share of s...

And besides the illegal immigrant issue it seems to me a big beneficiary of UBI would be illegal drug dealers. I'm not following you here. Why would drug dealers benefit (apart from the possibility that they too might be getting UBI payments? O0 ) I believe the implication is that people will use t...

Re: UBI 2021

Haven't studied this issue either, but wouldn't a monthly check to every person in the country mean that almost all goods & services would end up costing more? A monthly check in the amount of $1,000 to 330,000,000 people is an extra four trillion dollars being pumped into the economy each year. It ...

Re: Masks Revealed as the Political Symbol They Are (And Have Always Been)

I also find it interesting that NYC's daily COVID hospitalization rate is exactly the same now as it was a year ago - when the mask mandates were freshly imposed and there was no vaccine. Last year, it continued to slowly drop through the summer, reaching a nadir of < 10 per day by the fall before ...

You would think that would lead to more sex --> more babies --> population GROWTH. But it probably only lead to premature divorce. :P Touché! They've gotten perhaps 100s of millions to take a mystery injection that zero long term studies have been done on...............to fight the flu. They've got business and other organs of society ready to ostracize people who don't want to be part of the experiment. It's nuts. Mission accomplished n...

This is an investing website (at least, it used to be), so I have to assume that most members are quite handy with numbers and wouldn't actually be talking about "billions" of people getting killed by a vaccine. Haven't read all the posts and links in this thread but is this really what we are talki...

jhogue,

Quick question...

Aren't you retired? If so, how are you pulling off the tax refund paper I-Bond deal each year? I think you've written that you overpay your tax. But that must be by thousands of dollars, right?

I share the nostalgia for paper savings bonds. Thanks for the reminder jhogue! Buying I-Bonds via Treasury Direct is on my to-do list for this week. As of today, one can now see the updated interest rates on their calculator that take that 3.54% inflation component into account. If I plug in 10/2021, I see a bunch of my I-Bonds purchased 20 year...

I am wondering for those who lean toward the virus response has been overblown, what do you guys currently think of what's going on in Brazil and India? Re: Coronavirus General Discussion

Well, it looks like the provisional death total for the US in 2020 is 3,358,814 according to the CDC. Link is here: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7014e1.htm As one would expect (assuming they have a pulse), COVID is way worse for older Americans. Of the total, 377,883 are categorized as C...

Re: Golden Butterfly asset location when retired with RMDs

If you don't have a lot of money in tax-deferred I guess you wouldn't need to worry so much about withdrawals kicking you into high tax brackets. Many of us though, will end up retiring stuffed to the gills in tax-deferred, and with little option but to make large withdrawals throughout retirement....
