Re: QCOM will be my next vp pick

old thread, old pick. It is not my next pick. There’s an interesting article in the WSJ about Apple’s struggle to replace Qualcomm’s modem chip with something in-house. It’s relatively difficult compared to designing their own microprocessor. In the meantime, Apple will buy the chips from Qcom throu...

Re: ARM (chip designer)

Would have thought that the public listing was more a case of sell high for the prior owners, market peak, rather than potential significant upside/growth. I didn’t address this earlier. From what I’ve read, the former owners will have an even bigger stake now than they had before the IPO. I’ll see...

Re: ARM (chip designer)

The hope is that they’ll prove to be a competitor to Nvidia in AI. Hope is all it is at this point, hence the nibble-sized bet. Nvidia is well-entrenched, and ARM has not proven itself in the field of AI. If Nvidia is overvalued, ARM is grossly overvalued. BUT, I avoided Amazon because analysts said...

Re: Figuring Out Religion

Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity... I’m reading a weighty tome on North Korea. It’s very interesting to learn that Kim Il-sung, Dear Leader #1 and grandpa of the current Dear Leader, had a Christian background. Both he and his wife came from observant Christian f...

hah! We had a local BBS in my town. I didn’t use it much, as there wasn’t much going on, but I did make use of CompuServe before I’d ever heard the word “Internet”. $8 an hour!

^ Nice ^ I feel guilty about eating octopus after watching ‘My Octopus Teacher’ on Neflix, but I still partake occasionally. _ _ _ _ _ Summary of a WSJ article: so when politicians decide they don’t want a TikTok ban after all, it’s not so much for libertarian reasons as it is because Jeff Yass and ...

Re: USA Deliberately Slowed 1980s Japan Economy?

Very interesting idea, stuper. I could go along with the idea that the U.S. sought it. Did they cause it (even with Japan’s own compliance)? It just seems like there are too many variables.

The wiki entry on the author is quite a read as well.

I can't believe I hadn't heard of King's Quest. I had to google it unfortunately. It looks like this would have been right up my alley, but maybe just a little before my time? It’s possible that Tortoise and Xan and i even played different generations of it. Mine was on a floppy disk, the big thin ...

Re: Putin Invades Ukraine II

I’m also fascinated by articles on businesses that haven’t extricated themselves from Russia. Whether you leave or you’re don’t, you’re kind of screwed. Some companies that haven’t left are finding it hard to get their dividends out of the country, including the energy firms of “friendly” India.

Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?

Okay dualstow, what's the new avatar? Is that an AI-generated image in the style of King's Quest? I’m a *huge* fan of King’s Quest, as my brother and I really enjoyed it in the 80s (1980?) after seeing someone play it in the store. But in this case, I merely typed “8-bit castle” into google images.

Re: Putin Invades Ukraine II

I read recently that Russia is adapting to the situation. it’s catching up with drones, for example. There was also an article in the Financial Times in which some Ukrainian officers said NATO training does not always work for their specific terrain and situation. With regard to mine clearning, one ...

Re: Putin Invades Ukraine II

I have no idea what that means. Too many 3-letter agencies for one thing. CIA? But, big picture, he had to get rid of his old friend at some point, right? It would’ve been unthinkable to let Prigozhin get away with those shenanigans. As for the method, some say it was because Wagner shot down Russia...

Pretend you’re going to print and then hit (yet another) share button to save it as a PDF instead. Btw, on my ipad I noticed that in Notes there’s also the option to scan pages. I scanned a piece of newsprint, and it added it as a page to my note in progress. Instantly searchable (OCR), not just a “...

Re: I Thought Gold Would Fare Better in 2022-23

Jack, that is one of the reasons I decided to go all physical (the other being the lack of forms and reporting until I actually sell). I was thinking about it this week when I was feeding cash into a bank account that was being double-charged for something for a while before I caught it (don’t ask)....
