MarketWatch article -- Scary 1929 market chart gains traction
This article is very interesting. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/scary-1929-market-chart-gains-traction-2014-02-11?link=MW_popular My questions: Would the PP be a good hedge against something like another 1920's crash scenario? Also, what do some of you think the chances are that the market dives ...

Re: Is the PP designed to accomodate something unique in history - U.S. bankruptcy
Sorry for digging up old bones, but this thread is very interesting and relevant to my current concerns. Towards the end of last week, I watched the video in the thread below and it had me totally paranoid to the point where I couldn't sleep over the weekend with all these doomsday thoughts racing t...

Re: Hope You Don't Need To Get Anything From Your Safe Deposit Box...
This is one of the things that scares me about a safe deposit box at the bank. If the sh** hits the fan, the banks would likely be closed indefinitely and you'd have no access to your cash/precious metals.

Re: Silver & Gold - Hidden Secrets Of Money - new Mike Maloney youtube video
Fascinating stuff. Thanks for posting this video. My only question is... How safe is the paper gold in my 401k that is split between SGOL and GTU? As a U.S. citizen, is there some way the govt can manipulate my holdings? I'm sure that some may say to own physical gold, but physical isn't feasible fo...

Re: Why such a big difference in daily performance between EDV and VGLT?
Thanks very much for your reply. Based on the feedback in this forum, I'll use the 50/50 EDV/VGLT split towards my 25% bond allocation.

Re: Why such a big difference in daily performance between EDV and VGLT?
Thanks for your reply. Would you still recommend a 50/50 split between these two for the bond holding in the PP? Also, sorry to get off topic, but what about VUSUX? That fund is also available to me at no commission fee. They are quite different. EDV holds very long-duration zero-coupon bonds, which...

Why such a big difference in daily performance between EDV and VGLT?
Sorry for the noob question.... I've read that some here have the 25% bond allocation split 50/50 between EDV and VGLT. I'm new to both of these ETFs, so I've only got a few shares each until I can figure out if I want to go all in (25% of total) with these ETFs in my 401k. When I checked my 401k b...

Correlation between price of gold and consumer-price index?
I found this article very interesting. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/gold-is-the-bad-news-over-2013-06-28?dist=beforebell So how should you decide where gold is in its long-term cycle? As a rule of thumb, the researchers urge investors to calculate a ratio of gold’s price to the level of the cons...

Re: physical gold
How about silver? I feel nervous about physical gold because I have nowhere to store it, and it is much costlier to get started with gold. I've got no physical precious metals, but I'm thinking of starting slow and buying some silver Eagles. Also, where do you guys store your physical gold? In a saf...

Re: Seeking advice: Do I have the wrong approach in my attempt at the PP in my 401k?
I'm curious. If I may ask....What do you mean by adding a little bit of additional security? Mostly I'm talking about physical gold ownership. If there's some kind of problem with your broker or the bank issuing the ETF, then you and your investments can take a hit. Physical gold ownership offers...

Re: GTU is Trading Below NAV
GTU's gold is insured by the custodian. From the prospectus: Uninsured and Underinsured Losses All of the gold bullion owned by GoldTrust is stored on an unencumbered and allocated basis in the treasury vaults of one of the largest banks in Canada in segregated safekeeping. The Bank, as Custodian,...

Also, strange question, but what happens if GTU's vaults are cleaned out in a robbery? Are we somehow protected or does our GTU balance go to zero? GTU's gold is insured by the custodian. Ok. Maybe I'm over-thinking it. The advice you guys are giving with the Vanguard funds is starting to go over my head. I don't want things to get complicated... Sorry for that. Your plan (VINIX, SGOL, TLT and SHV), is great. The other stuff we were talking about (VGLT, EDV, etc) are just some other...

Re: GTU is Trading Below NAV
Thanks for replies. I guess my next question is whether I should sell my 25% SGOL brokerage option in my 401k for 25% in GTU. Would there be any benefit in swapping out SGOL for GTU? I did this a few months back when GTU was trading at a 5% discount. It's an even better deal now. Even if the spot p...

Re: GTU is Trading Below NAV
I'm new to the Permanent Portfolio and I was reading a suggestion in another thread to buy GTU since it is currently at an 8% discount. Will someone please explain what this means? I know nothing about GTU. What exactly is GTU and how does buying it now vs. something like SGOL (my current holding fo...

Ok. Maybe I'm over-thinking it. The advice you guys are giving with the Vanguard funds is starting to go over my head. I don't want things to get complicated, so I'll just go back to the original plan of going with: Stocks (no change): 25% in Vanguard Institutional Index Fund (VINIX) -- 0.04% expe...

Re: Seeking advice: Do I have the wrong approach in my attempt at the PP in my 401k?
Per my 401k plan, since Vanguard ETF commissions are free, and non-Vanguard ETFs are $7 per trade, would it be better to go with the following? Stocks (no change): 25% in Vanguard Institutional Index Fund (VINIX) -- 0.04% expense ratio (sounds like you guys like this fund) Gold (no change): 25% ...

This is from the website in my Vanguard plan. Does this change anyone's mind about which ETFs I should go for? No commissions Buy and sell Vanguard ETFs commission-free* in a Vanguard Brokerage Account, giving you even more value for your investment. Low expenses Pay almost 75% less for Vanguard ETF...

Re: Seeking advice: Do I have the wrong approach in my attempt at the PP in my 401k?
I wanted to add that you need to pay attention to fees with these brokerage options. Are you being charged for every trade? If so, I would consider not using the brokerage option, or saving up in the regular 401k and then transferring to the brokerage funds maybe once or twice a year. Brokerage o...

Re: Seeking advice: Do I have the wrong approach in my attempt at the PP in my 401k?
This looks great. Other options you might consider: SHY instead of SHV (SHY is a 1-3 year duration, vs. SHV which is less than one year) GTU instead of SGOL (GTU is currently available at a 6% discount) Buy 30 year treasuries within your 401k if you can. My reason for using SGOL.... I like reading...

Re: Seeking advice: Do I have the wrong approach in my attempt at the PP in my 401k?
Guys, Thank you very much for your help. I am able to do a further brokerage option, as you guys have recommended. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way for me to get exposure to physical gold with my 401k plan (KevinW's recommendation) and I have no way to safely store it anyway. I'm glad y...

Seeking advice: Do I have the wrong approach in my attempt at the PP in my 401k?
All, I’m fairly new to the Permanent Portfolio and I’d like to get some opinions on whether I’m going about it the wrong way. My employer’s 401k plan is with Vanguard. This entire discussion relates to my 401k, as I have no other investment funds (other than 6-months worth of emergency savings). My ...
