Stable Value Funds

I have access to a stable value fund in an old 401k, and I"m thinking of putting some of my bonds there since the yield is much better right now than in short-term Treasuries. Before I do that, I'd like to know how safe it is. I know there are insurance contracts under the hood. Are there any horror...

The latest episode of "Real Talk with Zuby" is titled "Would Anarchism Work?" I haven't heard it yet, but Zuby is usually solid for some good conversation with an interesting guest.

Re: Optimal Diet

Cortopassi, I thought of more questions. For your meals, do you follow some kind of food plan on foods that you will or won't eat? How about quantity? Do you eat as much as you want, or have some kind of limit? I haven't read this whole thread, so sorry if you've already mentioned this. Do you have ...

Check it out in portfolio matrix. It recovers a lot better than you would think. https://portfoliocharts.com/portfolio/portfolio-matrix/ What is surprising is how much better you can make no brainer portfolio by using total stock instead of large blend and juicing a little more yield out of the cas...

Will be interesting to see if we have less than normal deaths in 2021 and the next few years. Of course, with untreated cancers, etc. due to the lockdowns, it may not be that simple.

So, five days a week you eat lunch and dinner, and two days a week you eat only dinner, and no other eating besides those meals? Am I understanding that right?

Just because you are a good faker, that is actor, does that make your opinion on politics any better than somebody else's? What if you are a good basketball player? I rarely watch movies, and the only sports I watch is tennis. As soon as Andy Murray, the insipidly defensive tennis player, starts opi...

An RMD cannot be rolled over to a Roth. If you are above the age at which RMDs are required, you must take your RMD before you do any Roth conversions.

Re: Mathjak! Do Safe Haven Investments Really Exist?

What does the "conservative model" portfolio look like broadly speaking? 25-35% equities and short to intermediate term bonds with a sprinkling of high yield.... This sounds like the PP with more bond risk, no gold, and I presume active management. Like you say, everybody gets to pick their poison.

Re: Golden Butterfly asset location when retired with RMDs

If you do charitable giving, you can earmark part or all of your RMD as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (I think up to $100k per year), and neither you nor the charity has to pay any taxes on it. Of course, it has to be an IRS-qualified charity.

Re: Golden Butterfly asset location when retired with RMDs

I think that gold and other collectibles are taxed at your regular income tax rate, but no higher than 28%. So, if you are in say the 22% tax bracket, then you pay 22% taxes on your gold gains. I could be wrong about this, but this is what somebody on this board told me. Somebody else please chime in.

Re: Mathjak! Do Safe Haven Investments Really Exist?

Not to derail the thread, but I don't understand MJ's disappointment. When I run the numbers for the standard PP from January 2016 to March 2021 in Portfolio Visualizer, it has a CAGR of 7.79% with a max drawdown of 6.78% and a Sharpe ratio of 1.05. The PP seems to be working fine as far as I can te...

The latest episode of The Glenn Show with Glenn Loury and John McWhorter, two black guys, discusses this whole issue. They basically have the same position as Sophie above. They say it's a lie that blacks are killed more often than whites by police. They say if blacks didn't have a culture of thuggi...

Re: Bitcoin as a complement or alternative to gold in the PP

I sold my 0.25 bitcoin some weeks ago when the price was at $48k. I wish I would have known it would go to $60k, but my crystal ball must have been foggy. I'm planning to buy back in when the bubble bursts, then ride the next wave up, hopefully sell somewhere near the top, and maybe pay off the rest...

What Maddy said! Almost everything that the Democratic/liberal establishment claims to do for racial minorities contains in it an assumption that they need help to survive in our society, and are congenitally unable - by virtue of their race - to do so on their own. How on earth can you not call th...

Vitamin D3 Cold Remedy

Sophie posted a couple months ago that when she feels a cold coming on she takes 10,000 IU of vitamin D3, and it seems to stop the cold cold. I've been waiting since then for a cold to come on. It finally did a couple days ago with the beginnings of a sore throat and my head feeling weird - congeste...

I had to buy a tool at Lowes this morning. The guy who helped me find it was shaking his head, because OSB board that recently sold for $8 each just got marked up to $50 each. That's insane. The price of new homes must be skyrocketing, which will make the price of used homes do the same.

My favorite home repair was not too long ago: the dishwasher quit making heat. It turned out that the problem was the connection between the control board and the heater, and the "by the book" repair was an expensive new control board. The actual fix was to put $.00001 of solder to connect the wire...

Re: Healthcare Workers Should Be Forced To Be Vaccinated

That last point about health care workers reporting bad side effects is clearly worse than crying Fire in a crowded theater and therefore should not be protected speech and should be criminalized.

It felt good to write that sentence. Now I can see why Democratism is becoming so popular.

If that was a "ravishing of democracy," I'd say you have a pretty low bar for what a ravishing is. Did they find a single fire arm or bomb on any one of those silly protesters? I'd bet good money that the whole Capitol invasion thing was allowed to happen by the powers that be so that they can crack...

Re: Reasons why I will not be getting injected for the Wuhan

There's plenty of stories of medicines rushed to production that have caused more problems than they solved. Even our resident physician, Sophie, said that she wouldn't have gotten the vaccine unless her employer pushed her into it. I'm certainly in no rush to get it. Call me a Karen if you like. I ...
