Re: PSA: I now have a 3-year period with no gains
About 2.5 years for me with only a 15% gold allocation. Right now the PP is negative both nominal and real. Would have been even worse with a 25% gold allocation. BH is positive both nominal and real with the same 25% stock.

Re: Finance and Investing Books
After Against the Gods, I read almost everything by Peter L. Bernstein. Excellent writer.
I just finished Ron Chernow's House of Morgan (731 pages or so - goes to about 1990). Overall very good, with the first 250 pages or so being particularly good as it covers earlier American history.

I have been considering the same thing for some time. Just saw this: http://lifehacker.com/why-i-killed-my-standing-desk-and-what-i-do-instead-1565554537 Look at the other articles that appear in "boxes" in the article itself that have other viewpoints. I was thinking of a blend between s...

Whitepaper by R. Ferri & A. Benke (2013) - Compares Index Portfolios v. Managed
You likely already intuitively reached the same conclusion, but this provides some evidence. "The success of index investing in individual asset class categories has been widely documented; however, surprisingly little research is available that compares the performance of diversified portfolio...

PP vs Bridgewater's All Weather http://seekingalpha.com/article/878251-bridgewaters-all-weather-portfolio-vs-harry-brownes-permanent-portfolio All investing carries risk. There is no portfolio that will eliminate risk (risk being defined as loss of assets and/or purchasing power). If you would like...

Re: Is the PP dead in light of Fama, Hansen and Shiller's "Nobel"
I think folks may have misread the original post. The work is not claiming that economic conditions (inflation, deflation, etc.) are predictable for a 3-5 year time frame, but that asset classes (stocks bonds, etc.) are predictable. Therefore, if we assume that the 3-5 predictions are accurate (a f...

Is the PP dead in light of Fama, Hansen and Shiller's "Nobel"
The PP is based on the premise that economic conditions are not predictable. Therefore, the PP is structured for various economic conditions. However, if assets class returns are predictable for period of 3-5 years, then isn't the PP now irrelevant because one may simply look at the asset class pr...

Interesting reading. Thanks for sharing. I thought others might find this quote interesting: In Chapter XVII of his Rule of 1221, [Saint] Francis told the friars not to preach unless they had received the proper permission to do so. Then he added, “Let all the brothers, however, preach by...

Just finished Mandelbrot's Misbehavior of Markets. An interesting perspective, but wonder if "fractals" will stand up to the test of time anymore than the financial theories, e.g., Black-Scholes, that he finds to be inaccurate.
